We have had a caravan in a storage area in the South of France on the camp site we use regularly each year. It has only been towed 2 Klms each year from the storage area to the pitch given for the past 5 years. We are no longer going to continue on the camp site so wish to bring the the caravan back to our property in the Dordogne and friends have offered to do so for us, having a weeks holiday on the site before. We have not had the van serviced in that time as we have not used it in the road. We are not able to have it serviced on the camp site so wonder if it would be OK to tow it back to our home ?
Welcome along to the forum. Does the storeage site tow to the campsite or do you move it yourself. If the storeage site moves it could you not phone them and ask them to take it out for a good run and ask if it seemed okay. Compensation for fuel may be required, but that depends on how well you get on with them.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
The storage is on the same site in another area , just about 1 Klm from our usual pitch . I know they would not be prepared to do that for us, there is a new younger generation taken over the running and they are not that helpful but! I will ask them
How many miles to tow it? If 100s on motorway & tyres are well over 5yrs old then change them or risk failure at motorway speeds. If you can't get it serviced you will have to hope grease has not melted out of wheel bearings if 'van is not modern enough for sealed bearings.
Tbf, nobody can really answer your question anymore than you can & tyres might even be ok if not perished but if they have been baking in sun for 5yrs they probably will be(perished). If you can't get it serviced your friends will just have to hope its ok. If you are going to risk it with tyres then ensure pressures are correct & wheelnuts are checked & tight. I suggest they keep speed down to 90k.
I have decided to make contact with a person who did some repairs against campsite insurance, having damaged part of rear number during move to pitch. Will see if he can arranged a visit to view situation, thank you all for your comments and yes!! In a France caravans are registered.
I agree, at the very least brakes, lights and tyres should be checked. How old the tyres are also needs to be taken into account and at 5 years I would not risk towing with them. Are there no mobile caravan techs that could come to the storage and check it out?
------------- It is a wise man who has something to say.
It is a fool who has to say something.
As mentioned; we will make contact with a local caravan service person and to ensure the van is serviceable, we have decided to go down ahead of our friends also to ensure things are ok for them to tow. Next question, no doubt ". So why don't we tow then " ? Two reasons: we are too old and our french licence forbids us towing and we don't have a tow bar.
Thanks one again

P.s. Re insurance, The caravan has its own insurance cover here in a France
I have kept mine but my wife did a little too much speed arriving at a peage and some police persons were waiting for such an event, to have points put on your licence it has to be a French one and she was directed to change for a French one. We are full time residents not nationalist
