We have just changed from a 2008 2.2 Santa Fe to an 2009 2l S-Max. I loved the Santa Fe and would have kept it forever if it hadn't had so much wrong with it and been expensive to repair (the cost of replacing one of the self levelling shock absorbers is somewhere in excess of £600), it towed extremely well, felt very safe to drive in and was extremely comfortable.
However, now we have changed, I'm glad we did. Yes, it's cut a few caravans off our list of possibles (we've set a maximum MTPLM of 1550kg for our next van), but it tows our current 1500kg van absolutely effortlessly, it's very comfortable, the rearmost two seats are fine for children, and the mpg makes me very happy :-) In fact, when we fetched the caravan back empty it would be a similar weight to your van and we were getting 30mpg towing (Santa Fe 22mpg), and after a (non-towing) trip down the roadworks-filled M1 at the weekend I'd managed 61mpg. If you do a lot of short local driving, the S-max will still hover about 40mpg, the Santa Fe perhaps 25-28 tops. The spec on the S-max Titanium is excellent, parts are cheap and readily available and practically any garage can read their diagnostics codes.
