I always tow as my husband won't! It's great once you get used to it. Make sure your car and van are well matched and take extra caution on corners, roundabouts etc. If not sure about reversing etc, get out and have a look! Don't guess. You'll gradually relax, but always keep concentrating. Enjoy the astonished looks you get, more from women than men I have to say. If you can drive, you can tow (with care). If you have kids, get them to help you hitch up, I am sure they will enjoy it too. I really enjoyed the Caravan Club course at Lewes, it is very popular so book soon.  Even if you have to wait ( I did 6 months) you can still make a start, just take it easy.  All the best Gail.

I've towed for about 13 years, taking it in turns with Husband till I was widowed.

To give me more confidence to do it on my own I went on one of the C & C C towing courses and found it very worthwhile, even tho' I had been doing it for 10 years.

The children can be helpful (if they're in the mood) and can be "trained" to make the right sign language to help you know where you're going when reversing.

Munchkin

I am gradually building up my towing experience, in fact will probably get another couple of hours under my belt tomorrow morning on the way to the Scottish Easter meet.

Last weekend to try reveversing my OH and I went to a local industrial estate with loads of open spaces and marked parking bays and I played around for an hour.  I would say I am an expert now but am certainly more confident.

Good Luck

Sarah

I have just started towing, and I agree, - if you're careful and take your time it is straitforward - so far!!!    Thanks for the tip, I think I will go to an industrial estate to practice manoevres.

Although it is a bit disconcerting to see a large white wobbly thing so close in the mirrors!!!!!!

I quite enjoyed the astonished look from the bloke in the caravan opposite, when he settled down to enjoy the spectacle of a woman attempting to reverse onto a pitch - ha ha, disappointed him!!!!!!

I did the CCC manoeuvring course at Hendon and found it very useful - can now reverse the unit around corners which I couldn't do before! it's of limited use to only be able to reverse in a straight line............

I tow, partner has not that long passed his test. I asked his driving instructer when we bought the van if she would teach me to tow. She said yes. In the event, I was presented with a fait au complait (sp?) and I just started towing. So try a local driving instructor

Anyone passing their driving test after 1/1/97 is restricted in what they can tow; however, many caravan & car combinations will be within the limits unless you have a big 'van & 4 x 4 combination.

The total Gross Train Weight must not exceed 3,500 Kgs & the towcar must weigh more than the trailer - so stick a 4 berth caravan with an MTPLM of say 1,300 Kgs on the back of any car with a Max Weight of less than 2,400 Kgs and it is within the limits of a New Driver.

My hubby will not let me tow our caravan, even though i used to tow a trailer and i would love to be able to do it. I think you are all very brave and think i should try a cc course.
