This may be a self explanatory question but here goes anyway, at the moment I have light truck tyres on the caravan but I think they need changing. Expellant treed depth but there about 6 years old. I don't get to take the caravan out a lot due to work but cant wait till I can (maybe once ,twice a year atm) My question is should I get "normal" tyres or light truck tyres again, I do have Tyron bands fitted but was wondering if I need to go to the expense of a heavy duty tyre for once or twice a year. Its a 2 birth van 1045 kgs max. Just wondering what you guys and gal's thought......Thanks
If you exceed the load rating for the tyres then even new ones can fail at motorway speeds. Nobody can really answer your question without knowing size of your tyres, but for weight you state I would guess you would need van tyres. For example if 165/80X13C then these are van tyres with sufficient load rating for weight you state but 165/80X13 car tyres would not be suitable.
There is little difference in price where there is choice between car & higher rated van tyres of same size. Often van sizes are not available as car tyres, for example 185/80X14C is only available in van rating nowadays.
Tyron bands hold tyre on rim should it fail at speed. This will not happen if tyre has sufficient load rating & is not old & perished. After tyre size on sidewall will be load rating figure followed by speed rating letter. Tyre load ratings here. The number on the side gives load in kg for each tyre. To be adequate for your caravan each tyre should have a load rating of 88 or higher.
Van tyres car tyres and the like they are all the same they just have different load ratings and different constructions to match the load ratings. What you need are tyres that have a load rating that at least matches the maximum mass of the caravan. With a mass of 1024kg I would suggest that tyres with a load rating of 90 (600kg per tyre ) would be a good match.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Hi Micky one of my vans had Maxi-miler 185/80x14c tyres and could not find the same make size etc anywhere in UK even on the net. I had two new tyres fitted in my front drive by E-tyres exactly same sizes load bearing speed etc but Nexens motor van tyres for £100 all in no extra,s.
give them a ring and get a quote pay on the net with paypal or debit card and save upto 20% over local tyre dealer and the man from E-tyres in your town will drive to your house at time and date arranged. To fit about 3/4 hr they usually like a cup of tea/coffee when finished and you dont even get your hands dirty as they take your old dirty tyres away (sorted)
Thanks for the replies, the tyres on the caravan are light truck tyres with the name "CHENG SHIN" on them and don't appear to have standard markings on them. All i can see on them is 175 R13 ue-168 97/95N.
I get the 175/ R13 bit but the rest not sure on.
The speed rating is not relavent for caravan towing as they will all be rated for speeds over 60mph. The Maxxis tyre is popular fitment for caravans so I would go for that one. speed ratings
The old sizing 175X13 is nowadays usually sized as 175/80X13. The tyres in the E tyres link are direct replacement for ones you have.
michell8, Ordered two Maxxis tyres from Etyres. Only thing was it kept asking for my reg number when its for a caravan, so just put at bottom of the form that it was not for a car. Thanks again
Hi, Does anyone know if there is an extra charge for fitting tyres on a caravan wheels with tyron bands already on. Had a call from "E tyres" (I was at work)so my son took the call, they want me to ring back regarding an extra charge for fitting tyres on the van ???? didn't mention the bands to him. Its costing £144 as it is. Cant ring now there closed, but going to ring tomorrow. Just thought, forewarned is forearmed.
P.S I have even took the wheels off the van to make it easier for them.
