Sorry Bob, but you are incorrect.
You are required to notify your insurance company if the specification of your vehicle has been altered from it's standard specification. This has recently been confirmed by several insurance companies on another forum. Depending on what the alteration is will then affect how the insurance company will treat it. It is most likely that a tow bar will have no affect.

Insurers will not check unless you make a claim, so if you don't make one you're home free.

If you do make a claim you need to understand this about insurers - they do not make money by paying out claims and if they can find a reason not to pay they will grab it with both hands.

One of the first things they will do, especially with a big claim or write-off, is look for undeclared modifications. These can be anything; new alloy wheels, sports exhaust, new suspension, a towbar, or an engine remap. They're not stupid and they know these are becoming popular.

So you or a 3rd party write your brand new 25k car off you've had a tow bar fitted and not told your insurer....................... are you trying to say that they will throw your claim out ??

Utter rubbish Bessie500, there is no need to inform your insurers if you fit an approved tow bar it could have come with it, the same as getting it remapped you could have bought the car second hand with it already done without knowing it was done, its the same for winter tyres you don't have to inform them at all if you fit them, all it does is cost you time and money calling them, I bet you call them just because you have changed the colour of your fluffy dice

Come on Bob read my post again..........I was asking the question about the towbar as i can assure you no insurance company would throw a claim out because you forgot to tell them that you had a towbar fitted, could you imagine your car is involved in a front collision and is a write off, the car is 6 months old and cost 25/30k and your insurance company say they aint paying because it has a towbar and you never told them, I know they are bad but they aint that bad, thats like saying if you have a sp30 and never told the insurance company you wont get paid out for that either.......... rubbish

When I spoke to my insurer, he said that a towbar was a 'permitted modification', therefore not a problem.

I didn't ask about remapping. I'd be less confident about permission on that case.
