I've just bought my first caravan after having a tent. I'm a bit nervous of towing but I am going to have a course first but i think its the hitching and unhitching that worries me the most but am determined to do it as I love campsite life and a health problem has forced me to give up camping under canvas. As a lady myself I was wondering if there were other ladies out there happily towing and could pass on any tips.

Worth pointing out that there is no need to lift hitch onto towball if thats what you are worried about. The technique is to wind up jockey wheel until hitch is just higher that top of ball, then reverse car so ball is under hitch & then wind hitch onto ball.

Obviously it helps if you have an assistant to direct you & it is good to have a 'bash' plate behind towball to prevent marking car bumper. A flange ball can be fitted with a permanent bash plate or you can make up a plywood plate to push onto a swan neck just while hitching up.

There is no strength involved so what's the difference?
Do the course and you'll be fine.

Hi
I am a lady tower and have been towing for 5 years now. The towing itself I find a doddle. I have towed in UK and France. My hubby could tow legally but isnt a natural driver and the whole thought makes him nervous, so he just doesn't tow.
What I have started doing is going off by myself. I suffer from degenerative disc desease, have weak neck and shoulders and suffer from chronic tendonitis in my elbows. I have to say that I struggle turning the jockey wheel. The effort required is a bit too much for my weak arms. Other parts of setting up a caravan can be physically taxing if you are a bit weak to begin with. Winding the legs down, dragging the water barrel etc, even putting the connectors onto the battery I struggle with and my husband (who is not a DIY, physical type) makes it look easy by comparison to how much effort I need to put in.
BUT
I find ways of doing it that get around it. Like Having a waste water container on wheels and slightly smaller than normal, pacing myself, and I ask for help with the jockey wheel from any one who looks vaguely able onsite. I am not shy about it and have had to be persuasive when some individuals are not willing to be helpful.

Other tips:Fresh water barrel on wheels, put your toilet waste on top of your waste water wheely to take it to be emptied (and don't wait until it is too full or it will be too heavy to lift), use a hammer gently to secure battery connectors if they are very stiff, ensure greased leg winders....
If I had the money I would get a motor mover but I ask for help on arrival onsite to guide me into place. I am stubborn and could ask for more help, but I like to do it myself.

Generally people who help me are happy to help but they have been good at not taking over!

So, yes, it is a bit physical but it will not stop me from escaping in my van.
GO FOR IT! You will be fine.
Feezee

Practice, practice, practice.

We were all beginners once, so don't worry, just concentrate on the tricky bits, going forward is easy!

Feezee's post above just goes to show that not all men are natural drivers or DIY-ers, credit to her for getting stuck in and getting on with it.

Front towbars are a great help for moving caravans and trailers, We have one on the Discovery for moving our big 6-wheel drawbar trailer. When it comes to moving it, 3.5 tonnes is a bit much for people to shove about, but the front towbar makes it much more simple and easier to park.

I am a solo lady caravanner and I don't mind admitting that I was terrified the first time I towed by myself!
However, once I had actually done it I found it wasn't half as scary as I thought it would be and I now go off on my own regularly.
I still find reversing a bit tricky, but with anything, things get better the more you do it.

Once on site, just take your time - it isn't a race to see how fast you can get set up.
Use your car to get the caravan into position on your pitch.
As already mentioned, don't try and lift the van - use the jockey wheel to raise and lower the nose onto your tow bar.
I use small water and waste containers and have a folding trolley that I can attach the containers and the porta loo onto for filling and emptying.

Get out there and enjoy your caravan.

Yes I tow and I do find I get in a pickle with the reversing sometimes. Without doubt, get a motor mover fitted. Also saves the wear on your clutch. But like anything it just needs practice.

Im a lady tower too! Ive got a SEAT Alhambra and a 7.25m caravan. I had to take my test for the B+E as I passed my driving test in 1998.

I don't really find reversing a problem but I think I had an excellent Driving instructor for my trailer lessons. I agree a motor mover makes things so much easier. Although I do have a partner, I do the towing and most of the setting up including the awning, and maintaining the caravan whilst away. As he works 7 days a week, if away for the weekend he goes to work from there. I like him to sit down and relax when he gets back.

People on campsites and a few of my friends are amazed that I not only do it but as a woman I'm actually capable I don't see it as anything special, I just get on with it if it needs doing.

Give it a go, you'll never look back. And I'm sure you can find a couple of friendly campers on site to help if you need anything. ENJOY!!!

As Feezee says, you can do it even with a slight disability.
If releasing the jockey wheel is a problem a short piece if pipe over the handle will help.
An electric drill is a must for winding the legs.
Do you really need to remove the battery terminals? If you are removing the battery to charge it why not leave it in place and use a small solar panel to keep it topped up.
All the 'heavy' work can be sorted with a little thought. If it couldn't, many of us would have packed up caravanning years ago!

Hi all thank you so much for all your replies they are all really encouraging and useful to know how you go about getting over what could be difficulties. I've nothing but admiration for freezee I've only got arthritis of the spine so I should be fine. I to wish I could afford a motor mover but having it all to buy one of those is out of the question at the moment but certainly on my wish list. I should add I'm not going to be a solo caravanner my partner just prefers me to drive as they work hard all week I'm in the same boat as shelleybobs

Daves1, when we started caravanning I didn't get the whole electric drill thing.... I do now and it is on my list for the next caravan investment. Although the 7 year old boy seems to like doing that bit :-)

I too go away on my own. I love the caravan and it is the only way I can get away. I love the surprise you get from people when they discover I tow and go away with just the kids. The only problem I have is putting up a full awning on my own I'm too wee to reach the top, so I just take the porch one if I don't have company. You soon get used to it and if you really get stuck ask for help, someone is always willing to assist.

Go to B&Q and buy one of their cheapo electric screwdrivers -£10. You would be amazed, they are more than powerful enough for winding the steadies up and down, and the battery will last for at least 5-6 times of winding all 4 legs up and down.

They are very, very light which should be a bonus.

Surprisingly, they are quite good screwdrivers too!
