We are going to Newquay in July which we have done for the last few years.
I was wondering if anyone has a preference for a particular route. I have always used M5 - A30 in to Newquay. Google maps just gave me an option to use M5 - A38 with only a few miles difference and 20/30 minutes time difference?
I've always used M5 A30, its all dual carriageway now to Newquay exit. The Plymouth way has toll bridge on the way back as well, £3 car/caravan. Listen out on the traffic news though coming down M5 if you are travelling at peak time though because either way can get badly stuffed due to accident or whatever & go the other way if necessary.
the only problem on the A30 is there is likely to be queues from the end of the dual carriageway at temple till the start of the bodmin bypass but this is mainly on Saturdays now that the indian queens dual carriageway is up and running I used to patrol that area with the highways agency but retired a couple of years ago so it may have changed but the A38 is a good option if traffic is really bad in the area
Hi All
Perhaps the 2 Bobs should get a job on the stage. I was thinking of going north on the M6 and when I get to the end I was going to turn round and head south….
Thanks for the responses. I will stick to M5 – A30 but keep an eye/ear on the traffic situation.

On the 2 Bobs bit why would you head for Dorset. You don't go through Dorset to get to Cornwall from the West Midlands.
after you have followed the first instructions, and you end up at the pointy bit, with the sea on both sides your already there
Also if you stop at Exeter for fuel don't go to the services. There is a big tesco a mile down the road, plenty of parking, fuel 10p per litre cheaper and breakfast for £5!

Ah, sorry...ok then...from the West Midlands travel west until you meet the sea then turn left and keep going keeping the sea on your right hand side. When you see a sign which says 'Cornwall welcomes careful drivers' you will know you are there.
Just had a nasty thought, if you travel south and it gets dark for 23 miles then suddenly becomes daylight again and the locals sound funny you have ended up in France via the tunnel
