Ok, need some help I think I've over googled the information now I'm completely confused. I have a category B on my license.
I have a hyundai Santa Fe 55 plate 4wd CDX 2l
It says on v5 mass in service 1813 and max permissible mass 2520
I have a lunar lx2000 505l which apparently is Mass in Running Order (Kg) - 965 and Maximum Allowable/Authorised Weight (Kg) - 1200
Can I tow these together on a category b? Please help! It's all sooo confusing.
No because the licence condition says the sum of the max gross weight of the car and the max permitted mass of the caravan must not be greater than 3500kg to tow with a B licence. Those two together add up to 3720kg.
With your Santa Fe and a B licence any caravan you buy must not be plated at more than 980kg.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
You add max permitted weight of car & max permitted weight of caravan together. Your car/caravan totals 3720kg. For licencing purposes these are the figures you go on. The actual weight of car/caravan together on weighbridge is not relevant for licencing purposes. To tow your caravan with your car based on the figures you have provided, you need B+E licence.
Licencing laws go on the max legally permissible weights for the vehicle and trailer/caravan not the actual weights
That would be 2520 GVW (MAM) for the towing vehicle and 1200 MTPLM (MAM) for the caravan in your case making a total permissible MAM of 3720 which is 220 over the 3500 limit for B licence towing
To rectify you problem you need to have a caravan with a max MTPLM of 980 or a vehicle with a max GVW of 2300

Oh pants! My fault I should have checked the new cars weight properly. Oh so now I need to do my B+E license! I've been researching and some of the prices are horrendously expensive!
There is a way out swap the 4x4 for a family sized saloon or estate you don't need a 4x4 to tow that van, but if you do want one there is always the Skoda Octavia or scout 4x4 and this will leave you well under the max weight
& just a bit more information, If you go to France with your outfit & the car has a gross train weight in excess of 3500kg you are limited to a lower speed no matter what you are towing caravan or 500kg trailer
in effect a car with a GTW of under 3500kg towing a caravan of 1300kg is subject only to the max 120kph allowed on motorways. While a car with a GTW of 3500kg towing a small trailer is subject to a lower speed of (I think)90kph
Taking the test will probably work out best and cheaper in the long run,as you will more then likely want to upgrade caravan/car in the future. There is a very good section in this topic (pink/car and trailer driving test) explaining everything about the test and what you need to do,at least you wont have to take a medical(YET)my last one (HGV) cost me £108(thankfully I'm Retired now)
The way money making laws are changing, there will be further restrictions for all of us in the future
