Bought a new tow car (new to us) and it has towbar and electrics already fitted. But it has 10 wires going into a 7 pin female plug, and a 7 pin male to 13 pin female adapter. Been googling for the last couple of hours and can't find anything on how this could be wired. It's a westfalia towbar, but there is nothing about this on their website. Might have to get a tester and try that way.

It will all depend on how your van is wired, all new vans come with one plug, old vans come with 2, now if you have 2 plugs on the car and have a new van you can get an adapter to join both, and the same if you have the new plug on the car, and you have the old 2 plugs on the van,
Both can easily be changed to do away with the need of an adapter cable
The van has 2 7pin plugs, but its the car that is confusing me. It has one 7pin plug, but there are 10 wires going into this plug. Why would it have 10 wires. I'm a little reluctant to plug the van in, just in case something goes pop.

Only way is to check it out yourself or get it checked. You need at least a black 7pin 12N socket on the car and a grey 7 pin 12 S if you want to use the fridge etc. Best is a 13 pin which may only have 10 wires going to it.
One or two extra wires might be to a micro-switch to disconnect the rear fogs when you put a plug in the socket. Not common but i have seen it
Do you know someone with a meter who could check the outputs for you?
Sounds like a bodge to me. Is it just 1 cable going into back of 7pin socket on car? Presumably then cable will be 13core cable so maybe 13pin socket has been changed for a 7pin? Your best bet is to google for wiring diagrams for '7pin wiring' & '13pin wiring' & go from there.
It was fitted when the car was bought new, westfalia detachable unit, fitted by Peugeot. Unfortunately the previous owner never used the towbar, or remembers what was wired in. There is a 7 core and a 3 core cable, think i will have to get the meter out and check it, there are no micro switches that i can see either. Only thing i can think of, is 7 core to one side of vehicle and 3 core to other

never asked my mate whose car it was, i fitted a tow bar on it last week and every time i walked past a sensor with the ignition on it beeps, must be bloody annoying though, there is a switch in the car to turn them off and there was also a little electric gizmo with the tow bar that switched the rear ones off when anything was plugged into the socket
