My brain feels like its about to explode! We are just at the start of our caravanning journey!
We have a skoda octavia 2.0 tdi DSG ELEGANCE 2005
after being on the phone to skoda, various caravan dealers we still can not find the kerbweight? The v5 certificate states 'mass in service' 1534 so is that it?
Getting lots of conflicting advice an we dont know where to turn. We are also trying to find our a caravan to buy, and to be honest the excitement is waining now ;( sooo blumin stressful!
Is it the estate or saloon?
The estate may be just slightly heavier but the figures below may be useful as a guide as I was looking at the Skoda Octavia 2.0 diesel estate before deciding to have the Volvo V50 as a towcar.
I however kept the details which are as follows:
Estate kerbweight = 1540 kgs. (1625 kgs. for the 4x4 version).
Its not really that important as long as you know more or less what the figure is. 1534kg is as near to whatever definition of kerbweight might be, so look for a caravan of around 1300kg mtplm. that means 1300kg max loaded weight.
Go by the V5C mass in service, my handbook states 'unloaded weight ready for work'!!! which is the same as the V5C weight. My 2012 is slightly lighter 1,495kg with a tow limit of 1600kg, GVW 2,095kg, GTW 3,695kg. I have the 140 (138bhp) CR engine manual giving plenty of torque and getting 33-35mpg towing and up to 64mpg solo. My van has a mtplm of 1,230kg giving a tow ratio of 82%.
The weight will also be on a plate under the bonnet, I cannot remember exactly where without looking at mine, but its usually on the top of the front panel near the bonnet catch, you could also just nip along to your public weighbridge and get the exact figure,

MIRO or kerbweight are not plated on the car. The four figures on the plate are max train weight, max gross weight, front axle max axle load and rear axle max axle load.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
