hi I have a vauxhall meriva 1.7cdti se ..2011 ...im so confused to the tow weights ive been on whattow car.com and im still confused ..I looking at getting a Bailey Ranger 460/4 .2006 ... would I b able to tow this

o I thought it had to be above 82% ( not sure where I got the 82% from ..so 79% will be ok to tow

The maximum towing weight for that car is 1200Kg. So with the MTPLM the Ranger 460/4 has of 1177Kg you could tow that van with that car. The only issue is that most will advise you not to exceed 85% of the cars towing capacity which would be 1020Kg.
If you are an experienced tow driver then go for it, but if this is your first time or you have little towing experience then I would stick to the 85% rule.

Also worth considering that you will be right on the capacity of your cars ability, so won't be doing it any favours by working it hard.

That combination can be driven on a B licence

GVW 2045 + MTPLM 1177 = 3222 which is not more than the 3500 B licence towing limit

We looked at the Meriva last year and rejected the idea as it wasn't big enough for us but it would have suited our Ranger 460/4 (1184kg).

There are several versions of the 1.7 diesel as well as manual and auto gearboxes, they all had a 1200kg towing limit. If you have one of the more powerful versions I think it would be fine but if you only have the 98bhp version I think it would be hard work on the hills for you and the car, the 128bhp model would be much more relaxing.

PS The kerbweights I have for that year are 1413 to 1439kg so still below the 85% guideline.

The standard recommendation is 85% of the cars kerbweight ( the mass in running order from the v5 will do ) not 85% of the maximum towing weight.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
