Hi,

I know this is probably a common question considering its not very clear rules/laws on towing.

I own a 2004 2.0TD RAV4 - Kerbed Weight 1,442 KG with a Braked towing of 1,500kg.

I have just bought a Caravan going on my cars towing capacity...

a 4 Berth Bailey Pageant Sancerre S7 - MRO 1,215kg and MTPLM - 1,445kg.

I passed my test after January 1997 so have a normal B Car licence which allows me to tow combined weight of 3,500kg(Even through some people are telling me I still can't).

So legally I can tow because its under 3,500kg but is it safe? Becuase if I load my caravan to its max at 1,445kg, I'm at 100% of my kerbweight.

I haven't towed it yet as I'm waiting to collect it.

Any advise would be gretafully appreciated.

Thanks, Ian

If you passed your test after 1997 you cannot tow a trailer/caravan that has a plated weight more than your cars kerbweight even if it is within your vehicles towing limit.
Also your cars maximum loaded weight (not kerbweight)added to your caravans MTPLM cannot exceed 3500kg if your a post 97 licence holder .
So you need a B+E test also I would surmise that your Toyota is to light to be towing that weight of van even though its within its towing limits as a 100% or above towing match is not good

I just double checked my cars weight and it's actually 1,565kg.
So the caravan is lighter than the car and I'm still under the 3,500kg limit.
I will be towing 95% of my kerbweight.

To reiterate it the Toyota's Maximum loaded weight (not kerbweight)+ the caravans MTPLM and if under 3.5 tons your ok.
If not you need B+E

Further to my last post
your caravan is 1445kg fully loaded so
you Rav needs to have a max loaded figure of no more than 2055kg .
To comply with B licence

2055 + 1445 = 3500kg .

look on your VIN plate as it will have the Ravs max loaded figure

Quite right, I have no idea how I passed mine, I drove terribly but still passed, still not convinced the examiner wasn't asleep.

To make B licence towing law simple ....

To tow a trailer/caravan over 750 kgs MAM/MTPLM on a B licence there is one extra law on top of all the usual towing laws and that one extra law is ....

.... The vehicle GVW added to the trailer/caravan plated MAM/MTPLM must not total more than 3500 kgs

The licencing laws go on maximum possible legal weights and not actual weights

I got 101% using what towcar, might have used the wrong model Rav though

Your kerbweight is only used to match your van to the car
because you ONLY hold a B licence you cannot tow above 3.5tons

You must find out what the maximum loaded weight your RAV can be , all cars have an empty weight and a maximum loaded weight I.e   how much the car can carry passengers , luggage etc .
THIS figure added to your caravans MTPLM 1445kg must not exceed 3.5 tons

You need to tell us the GVW of your car

If not on the V5 form then it will be on a plate hidden under the bonnet or in a door frame

The top figure of the four on the plate is the GVW

My Mondeo weighs about the same and the gross weight is over 2100kg.

I seem to remember a similar post where the RAV4 would be overloaded if you gave 3 well built rugby players a lift.

Depending on the drivers weight and if you have more than a teaspoon worth of fuel.

I do hope the OP does not ignore the advice given as he only holds a B licence and with his present car / caravan
combination the caravan MTPLM plus the Ravs GVW will almost certainly be above 3.5 tons
