Hi
can you help me are there any plans to change the car license for towing again. I passed my test 1987. But some one had told me that DVLA are going to remove the category for towing more than 3500 tones.
Thanks
Rob

From 19/01/2013 the EU brought in a retrospective rule for ALL B+E licence holders which is that they cannot to a trailer with a MAM of over 3500 kgs

Not many know about the retrospective bit because it was somewhat hidden in the small print

As it affects so few then no much has been asked about it

Those with pre 1997 licences have a C1+E which covers a trailer over 3500 with a B vehicle

That C1+E with 107 code has an upper total plated GVW/MAM limit of 8250 kgs

I know that but the EU has decided that for a 3.5 GVW vehicle towing a trailer over 3.5 tonnes which requires more than over-run brakes the driver must have C1+E

It seems they have decided in their wisdom to put the emphasis on the trailer as well as the vehicle

Getting paid or not has absolutely nothing to do with what licence is required

think your wrong . many mini artics are based on b+e licences . many are down plated to 3.500 and keep the original train weights .some upto 11/12ton and driven on b+e
there was a thing about pre 97 drivers keeping the old classes . it never changed as far as i know .
hope i,m right . ha ha .

If those artic trailers have a plated MAM of over 3500 then a C1+E is now required by LAW

The problem is that those who passed B+E after 1996 are not likely to be aware of this law !!

hi, just rang 0300 7906801 and was told pre 97 licences will not be loosing the right to tow heavier trailers . mind these will have to be semi trailers .
when asked they said its not retrospective .
b+e could be upto 11/12 ton .
this is a clause that does allow 70yr olds to have large outfits like fifth wheelers with no medical.

Ask them for a legal answer via their email contact like I have

My info is from a legal expert who read the small print on the EU directive not DVLA so I have now decided to ask the DVLA for a legal ruling - will post their reply when I get it

If I fail to get it then I will ask via my MP
