Hi Problem with groaning towball, changed the car last year,to a mondeo, fitted a witter swan neck bar.
First time out last week it made horrible squeaking noises, got worse after towing for wnewhile, mostly while cornering/turning.
Tried cleaning up the pads (alko) no difference, seems that I will have renew all the pads, pitch and side.
Has anyone got any other Ideas about solving the problem.
Make sure the tow ball is as clean as possible I use emery cloth and a brake cleaner spray as long as the pad wear indicator is in the green there's no need to change them unless they are damaged.
I had exactly the same problem when I started caravan but cleaning the internal friction pads with brake & clutch cleaner plus cleaning the towball solved my problem. I used to use smooth emery but found it scored the ball surface too much so changed to Wire wool instead which I found better. However, I still clean the towball afterwards with brake & clutch cleaner to remove any dust and grease.
Thank's for all your input,I've already got a new set of pads that I bought as spares years ago.
The towball is new, swan neck fitted last January
by a pro,Thats all I can think of,is that the pads have became worn after about 10 years on previous alko towbar.

Thanks all
After 10 years I would think it's about time to change the pads I've changed mine after 4 years.
Hi, Had the same problem last year towed all the way to Spain and back with the most annoying noise. Did the same and cleaned all parts which made no difference. After getting down under the car, found that the tow bar was touching a cross member behind the bumper. Removed bumper and cross member and refitted with a few adjustments.
It also was a Witter tow bar, not the same car, Mitsubishi ASX.
