Hi There,

We are looking at making the change from tenting to caravaning.  Our budget means that we are looking at a first van around 14 - 20 yrs old.  I cannot find a website that I can do a car/trailer compatability check.  The sites I have found only appear to deal with vans up to 6 to 7 years old.  Is there one that deals with the more mature vans!?

I will be using a Volvo V50 R-Design Sport which comes in at 1456KG's.  I have worked out that this will give me a MTPLM of 1259 kg's (85%). Though it also states a max breaked weight for towing of 1500kg (which has confused me).

A van I am looking at (private sale) the owner has said the plate states a Max Authorised Weight (MAW) of 1300kg and a payload of 228kg.

Is MAW the same as MTPLM? if so then this van is to heavy for the car.

The van in question is a Swift Welland Venturer 4 berth; I cannot find the specified MTPLM for this van.

Thanks in advance guys.  Whilst I have not towed large for a few years; I have towed for work for many years van/box trailer combo - but I am keen to make sure I do not exceed MTPLM.

Cheers Dan

Yes maw is same as mtplm, ie max on road weight including payload so as you say you may be over your 85% advisory limit but still legal for car to tow. The 1500kg max tow weight is a technical figure based on what the car is capable of towing not necessarily what is safe to tow, this decision is left to driver. You might not use all your 228kg caravan payload so you might come in at 85% or less anyway.

With a caravan, due to large side area to get caught with cross winds the 85% limit is advised to avoid 'tail wagging dog' but your choice if you want to go over it a bit.

Don't get too besotted about the 85% figure, at best it is only an advisory value to guide those without caravan towing experience towards stable outfits.
There is a great deal more to stability than the ratios of the masses of vehicle kerb weight to trailer maximum weight. These are the characteristics of the tow vehicle, lateral stiffness of its rear suspension, overhang of the rear and its centre of gravity height. Plus the towing experience of the driver, here you have a lot more than many beginners.
You have a "sports" model vehicle, so it will have quite high lateral stiffness and a lowish CofG both moving in your favour. I would have no hang up exceeding a 90% ratio given what you have told us.
Legally you must not exceed the car's quoted towed mass, as you say 1500 kgs.
So don't compromise your caravan choice by focusing too restrictively on that arbitrary 85% ratio.

Edit: I should have added that if you obtained your driving licence after 1997 you are also restricted to not towing a greater mass than the vehicles mass [not its kerb weight, its actual mass]
