Can anyone please recommend the most affordable car to pull an Elddis odyssey 540 caravan? Needs to be economic & diesel.

When you say 'most affordable' you really need to be a bit more precise as to what your budget is and exactly what you expect in running costs etc.

Any older diesel car is affordable until you need to fix it & then you may find it is beyond economic repair. Rather than recommend a particular car you just need to find the best one that you can at the time. Look for a car with a service history.

I have an antara 2.2 lease car now. But I can no longer keep it and the cost of a new lease is in the 450 mark which as a family we can no longer sustain.

I will have to purchase one and have a budget of around 8000 must have good mpg as I will be doing 500 miles a week work wise and mustn't be a bone shaker.

Any suggestions I have 2 months to source the car.

It may help if you post the MTPLM weight of the caravan so maybe a few people can offer further advice now that you have stated what your budget is. I know a lot of caravanners opt for the Mondeo as a towcar but not familiar with kerbweights so unsure if it would be quite suitable for your needs.

Unladen weight is useless to work out the towing limits though. You need the gross laden weight.

1302 unladen 1500 - 1700 laden? Wide enough range there to push out most estate cars.

So you maybe looking an an MPV or 4x4.

I towed same outfit as yours with insignia 2.0 estate . Did it with ease with decent economy . Only got rid of it because it struggled for traction on wet grass as we were doing a lot of rallies at the time it was embarrassing getting towed on/off . Ironically we part exchanged it for an antara but now we don't rally very much so the traction wouldn't have been such a big issue !

I tow a Bailey Pageant Provence series 6 max weight of 1490kgs with a 2.0tdci Mondeo. The Mondeo returns over 50mpg solo and 33ish with the van on the back and can only say what a tug it is, I partexed a 2005 Mondeo 2.0tdci and never thought it could be beaten but Ford I have to say have made the Mondeo better and the new 140bhp engine is awesome. Worth a thought.
