In the scheme of things it's not much but I recently purchased a 1998 Volvo V70 T5 Automatic to tow our caravan with, I purchased it as our main towcar has been a Mk3 Mondeo that is also my working vehicle (taxi).

It certainly has plenty of power and will do the job admirably for us, I've just ordered a towbar from Towsure for £58.00 so that will be fitted along with the electrics on Sunday by myself, weather permitting of course.

I wish I could put my own tow bar on!!

Sounds like a nice car. What does it do to the gallon?

Colin how much does your tow car do? I'm looking for a new tow car myself.

You can usually find most vehicle statistics if you search the net. Below are the statistics for the earlier Volvo V70.

I usually get around 38 mpg average, based on mainly fairly local journeys with the occasional longer run. I would imagine though that a petrol V70 would do somewhat less. These cars are very comfortable on a run, have loads of space for luggage etc., and make excellent tow cars.

Regarding putting on a tow-bar, that's the kind of thing that I would have always done myself in the past, but with "modern" electrics I wasn't so sure, as my car has things like rear parking sensors and bulb failure devices. Not just a case of tapping into the rear light circuits, as I would once have done.

T5 estate. I thought the cruise control automatically set itself to 90mph when you hitch a caravan up?

Or maybe thets only on the M5.. I was overtaken by one once and he was going some...

How do they manage to do that? To do it with mine I'd have to hold it in first gear! As they are such smooth running and quiet cars, I always find that keeping the speed down is much harder than keeping up with the traffic.

I have a volvo v70 2,5 se petrol Automatik mark 1

Heavy enough for towing a 1800 kg caravan,
It uses a it fuell, but is stable, great to tow and comfy to drive.
I supply's mine with them rubber parts on the rear springs
( can't remember the name now ) and it improved the drive.
I also have a roofbox on it when towing and two dogs in the rear.

The only reason I don't use the volvo now is I like towing with the pajero which gives me the 4wd drive and is a much heavier vehicle, therefore
More relaxing to tow.

I am not a fan off any new cars at all,
No character, no style, just don't like the,.
And I like screwing around on my cars myself instead paying a garage for replacement jobs.
May a little factor but, I don't want to pay green taxes for what comes out of my exhaust, I prefer the old cheaper style tax system which allows me driving a high powerd car with a big engine cheaper then a modern 2,5 liter car. Sometimes they even more reliable as they have less electronics. Lol

Was looking to replace my old Nissan Almera Auto 1.6 with a 1.8 younger model, except the insurance went up on a quote by £120 from £170 to £300-odd a year - what do they think a 1.8 nissan almera auto is - a racing car???

Jax365, try a different company, or use a comparison site. I have no idea why, but some companies seem to like certain models and hate others, while with a different company it is the other way round. There's no logic to it.

Years ago I had a MK2 GT Cortina, and changed it for a VW camper. The insurance company I was with and who had been very reasonable in the past, quoted me some ridiculous amount, like I was trying to insure a Ferrari. I swapped to another company who quoted me less than I had been paying for the Cortina. There were no comparison sites back then (no internet) so I used a broker. When I asked them why the first company had quoted me so high, they told me that the insurance company didn't like VWs.

Colin

Had the same problem.
I was with swinton for 6 years cars and motorbike.
Rover 827si auto 280£/year
Volvo v40 2,0 se auto 278£/year
Volvo v70 2,5se auto 310£/year
Tryd to tell me the pajero 1991 would be 1100£/year because is a import
I told them to stuff it somewhere and Canceld all insurances with them the same day.
Now I pay for the volvo v70 243£/year
Pajero 205£/year
Both fully comp.
( motorbike sorn as I hardly go on it anymore, may sell it )

I learned my lesson not to stay loyal with any insurance company.
They all the same. Want you're money and don't want to pay out.

Every time I renew any insurance I check comparison sides first.
And I never pay any insurance in full up front.
Monthly, if any problems stopp paying and cancel.

Btw, only have the nessesary insurance I need by law, everything else is for me a waste of money anyway.if it comes to it, they try to find a way not to pay out.
