I have just bought an 11 plate Vauxhall meriva 1.7 cdti diesel automatic. I haven't got a caravan yet, but just toying with the idea - is this car suitable for towing and what should I be looking for with regards van to car ratio?
All advice greatly appreciated.

Jason
car and van matchWe all have to start somewhere We started with a cheap but good caravan just to see if we liked it. Found if you buy cheap but good you get your money back, unlike trading in cars. We are now well up the ladder with a fixed bed only a couple of years old. We also went to a local dealer and picked his brains. The same dealer sold us our first van and we went back to trade up. So my advice is play safe buy from your local dealer, you may also get a guarantee, we did.
What you need to do first is find out what the kerbweight of the Vauxhall Meriva is then (as a novice to towing) you need to work out what 85% of that kerbweight is which can be done by using an online percentage calculator. When you have the result of that then you need to find a caravan with a maximum laden weight (MTPLM) of no more than that figure. Ignore the unladen weight (MIRO) as this is the weight when the caravan leaves the factory and has no relevance at all regarding calculating the vehicle and caravan match.

click the Dimensions tab
Kerb weight = 1439
GVW = 2046
Max towing capacity = 1200
Max MTPLM for a caravan = 1200 which will keep you under the recommended 85% advice for a first timer and will keep you within the max towing limit
You can legally have a MTPLM over the max towing limit providing the actual weight when loaded does not exceed 1200
You can legally drive that on a B only licence because the GVW 2046 plus the MTPLM of 1200 = 3246 which is not more than the 3500 limit for B towing
