is it best to load the car up with gear or the caravan ?

Normally the car, as long as you don`t exceed any axle or max weight limits.

I always balance it out between the two as I find that having a bit of weight in the caravan creates more stability as an empty caravan can sometimes bounce more especially going over speed bumps both on the road and on some campsites. It also puts less strain on the vehicle's suspension and springs.

An unladen caravan may bounce more. They usually tow better with some weight in them.

Adding all the luggage to the car could overload the car also.

Its a balancing act between car and van. Lots of figures to stay within.

Cars max laden weight, As well as front and rear axle loading limits. Noseweight which also affects the rear axle loading.
Cars max tow weight, Caravans gross laden weight, Combined car/van gross train weight.

Lots of variables where one person maybe close to their vans limits not not their car.

I've found the caravan seems to be more stable when it is well loaded with heavy items around the axle. I've also fitted shock absorbers on my caravan to give more control. By experience I've found the car suspension seems to cope better without heavy items in the boot when towing. I think its to do with momentum and dynamics. Of course everything should be within the specification of both car and trailer.
