Sorry about the dramatic title. I have previously posted about my 63 Plate Sportage being very low when coupled with the caravan. Hedleys Towbars ,of Durham ,who fitted my Witter swan neck tell me that have had "loads" of Sportages back with the same problem. He said the problem occurs with all makes of towbar that they fit. Hedleys fit Towbars for local Kia Dealerships too.Rang Caravan Club and they said they can't approach Kia with just one complaint and suggested I posted on Caravan Forums. So if you have a similar problem please contact CC, if you are a member. It seems to me that it is a suspension issue,CC club suggested Dunuts in the springs. anyone know about these?
Spoke to the Kia Dealership, where I bought the car, and was told that they had had "a couple of Sportages" back with the same problem. They will get back to me tomorrow when they have made further enquiries
Sounds like overly soft rear springs on the rear, so any kind of weight on the rear - further out too at the tow hitch (thinking a lever type of action), is going to make the back end 'saggy'.
Service manager at Kia dealership has told me that Kia are aware of the problem, but at present are not taking any action. He said that he has fitted do nuts, plastic inserts into the springs for one customer and will ring him tomorrow to ask if he is happy with the results.
A 4X4 the size of a Sportage, which is a popular towcar, should not need alterations to its suspension when only a few months old.
Also Hedleys, the towbar fitters, will now explain to Sportage owners that they may experience a sagging problem, regardless of which towbar is fitted.
Kia Uk will ring me back tomorrow.
I will not be giving up!
I agree, but it should still tow a caravan without sagging.
I will fit the donuts, I rang Graystons who distribute them and the chap told me that they sell hundreds to people with caravans. He said they sell them for all sorts of vehicles because car makers design the suspension for comfort rather than towing.
We tow with a Hyundai Santa Fe, (2011) found the rear really sags with the caravan, jockey wheel clearance always a problem when hitching. We have now fitted MAD springs, totally different ride and caravan and car now level with plenty of room for the jockey wheel to be raised when hitching up the van. . As other posters have stated the rear springs on the Santa Fe are soft and when fully loaded with luggage, children and the van, the rear wheels do move well up into the arches.
