Hi all,

This is my first post on the forums but just looking for some advice around changing my towcar.

I'm thinking of changing my BMW 1 series for a VW Passat CC 2.0 TDI 140 with the DSG box. I was wondering if anyone had any experience towing with one of these or any of the other VW group cars with the DSG gearbox? I only tow a two berth Fleetwood Colchester with a max of 1150kg so know it will be more than enough weight wise.

I tow with that same engine in a Yeti and it is no problem. Friends have the same but with the DSG box and say the same thing.

I've a Skoda Superb 170 DSG estate and it makes a great tow car. Our 'van weighs 1350kg when maxed out which is almost exactly an 85% match for the car's kerb weight.

The DSG box takes the hassle out of stirring the gearbox to maintain speed, and combined with cruise control (where appropriate) it makes for effortless towing as the gearbox will automatically drop down through the gears when necessary. I also have flappy paddles behind the steering wheel for the rare occasions when I want to change gear myself.

I have the Passat Estate 140CR with the DSG. Previously had the same car and engine but manual. Both very good tow cars, but the DSG is superb when towing and takes the crown in my opinion. I generally feel less tired when arriving, and twisty up/down devon lanes are now a breeze. As per previous poster, I also have the flappy paddles on the steering wheel - these are useful on the rare occasion that the box gets a little confused - very rare though.
Only downside is that it can be a little trickier initially when maneuvering in tight spaces - as its a automated manual it doesnt automatically creep like a traditional automatic, and you can feel the clutch come in and out when letting off the brake and going back on it - not a problem, but takes a bit of getting used to when converting yourself from a manual where bringing the left foot up almost immediately starts moving the outfit and as slowly as you like - the DSG is a little more on or off, but controllable with very gentle brake action.
Cheers
Rob
