Decided to look at the specs etc for this following the Practical Caravan Overall winner award this year. We currently have a 150 bhp Saab 9-3 Sportwagon, which tows brilliantly due to low rear overhang, stiff suspension and of course power aplenty. In the future, once either something goes drastically wrong and/or Saab-specific parts become hard to obtain, we will change the car. We are looking this early for possible replacements. So following the award by PC, I have checked and found the max tow weight for the Qashqai abysmally low. For the auto (which I need due to left ankle arthritis) it is, at 1350kg, less than the MTPLM of our caravan! Even the manual is only a bit higher. Given that the weight of the Qashqai is higher than that of the Saab, what is going on? Is it due to a less than sturdy/capable chassis? Naturally the auto would have less max towing weight than the manual, and as there is not much difference, I suspect that it is structural constraint. I remember when we ran our Rover 45 Tdi, it had plenty of power, and towed our (then) Whirlwind (1000kg MTPLM) along very well, and it felt like it could have pulled a heavier 'van, but the limit suggested that it also had chassis limitations.
Considering the looks of the Qashqai suggesting a strong vehicle, what gives? I would have thought that the 2 litre 150 bhp one at l least would carry a high towing weight but very disappointed as we like the look of them and our daughter has one, finding it easy to drive etc.
Also looking at the Kia Sportage, but there appears to be a problem with sagging rear ends. OK, so one could fit some spring assistance, or levelling, but a lot of insurance companies will either refuse cover or apply an unfair loading. I am wary of self-levelling shocks, as the suspension design of such cars, AFAIK, mean softer springs and I am so used to the fantastic stability with the Saab that I feel I would be disappointed with anything less.
Bah!

Thanks guys. Either of those OK but ATM out of my price range just now. However, later as/when the Saab goes, may be within the budget, as of course the later 2 lite diesel Qashqai with the higher (1800kg) towing limit will. Still curious though what the difference is in structure etc between the Qashqais!

It's the same with my ASX. 150bhp engine, 1400kg towing limit. However, the Outlander which has the same engine and gearbox, the same 4wd running gear and even the same wheelbase and weighs in at just 200kg more has a towing limit of 2000kg. Even the hitch has a lower limit, yet the rear overhangs far less than the Outlander.

I think it is a deliberate policy on the part of Mitsubishi to keep the sales of the far more expensive Outlander up. It could be the same with Nissan to point caravanners in the direction of more expensive cars.

Might be the cooling, but it could possibly be that they have just used the 1.6 petrol versions weight, and used that across the range just laziness on Nissans part
Best thing to do is contact Nissan direct and ask
I would suspect it to be around 1600 KG

I thought it related to the maximum weight for a hill start on a 1 in 4 incline?

Yes, that is what the manufacturers base their max towing weight on.
I've looked into the Qashqai specs further, and found that the figure jumps to 1800kg around the end of 2013. So either the cooling system/gearbox cooling or rear chassis members have been beefed up. If we ever get into the realms of purchase a few years down the line, I will enquire from Nissan just what they did!!
Thanks again for all the comments.

There is a new Qashqai model for 2014 and that is the one that won the awards. There is a new X Trail coming out this month which looks like a Qashqai but has 4wd and more engine options.

Explain that against an ASX against an Outlander with the same/engine/gearbox/drive system? It appears that is not always the reason.

I rate my 2008 Rav4 D4D highly.... 1710kg kerb weight, and oodles of power to spare.  Just came back from Wales to Mcr, went up that big hill on the A55 at 60mph in 5th easily, with a fully loaded car and a 1300kg caravan on. Also averaged 36mpg !

Hi, we have just returned from Cornwall (320 mls) using a 2.0 dci manual qashqai, for the last 4 years we have used kia sorento auto which would pull anything . We were a little worried as the 1400kg max towing weight was a lot lower than the Kia. So we just weighed everything and decided what we actually needed and what we usually take and rarely use. Eventually we kept under the 1400kg weight and just put a little more in the car. Towing mpg for the Kia was 20mpg or lower but the qashqai was running around 29-30mpg ,much cheaper for towing and uses far less fuel in the other 48 weeks of the year and less to load and unload
