Decided to look at the specs etc for this following the Practical Caravan Overall winner award this year. We currently have a 150 bhp Saab 9-3 Sportwagon, which tows brilliantly due to low rear overhang, stiff suspension and of course power aplenty. In the future, once either something goes drastically wrong and/or Saab-specific parts become hard to obtain, we will change the car. We are looking this early for possible replacements. So following the award by PC, I have checked and found the max tow weight for the Qashqai abysmally low. For the auto (which I need due to left ankle arthritis) it is, at 1350kg, less than the MTPLM of our caravan! Even the manual is only a bit higher. Given that the weight of the Qashqai is higher than that of the Saab, what is going on? Is it due to a less than sturdy/capable chassis? Naturally the auto would have less max towing weight than the manual, and as there is not much difference, I suspect that it is structural constraint. I remember when we ran our Rover 45 Tdi, it had plenty of power, and towed our (then) Whirlwind (1000kg MTPLM) along very well, and it felt like it could have pulled a heavier 'van, but the limit suggested that it also had chassis limitations.
Considering the looks of the Qashqai suggesting a strong vehicle, what gives? I would have thought that the 2 litre 150 bhp one at l least would carry a high towing weight but very disappointed as we like the look of them and our daughter has one, finding it easy to drive etc.
Also looking at the Kia Sportage, but there appears to be a problem with sagging rear ends. OK, so one could fit some spring assistance, or levelling, but a lot of insurance companies will either refuse cover or apply an unfair loading. I am wary of self-levelling shocks, as the suspension design of such cars, AFAIK, mean softer springs and I am so used to the fantastic stability with the Saab that I feel I would be disappointed with anything less.
