Hi having a bit of a panic here

We have purchased today an upgrade on our old van. We bought a Swift Freestyle 2009 530 caravan. Dealer check against our car a 2009 Mondeo 1.8 Edge diesel showed yes it was a towing match.

Going onto the caravan club site we find they don't recommend the match.

Yes I know we should have checked ourselves before buying but the price was good and the layout was perfect. Now I'm really worried.

I should add everything is under 90% except the match to the kerb weight which is showing 99%. Anyone towing with a similar match

5 berth
Single axle
Mass in Running Order (Kg) - 1273
Maximum Technical Permissible Laden Mass (Kg) - 1490

Help what would everyone else do?

Should we try it knowing that after purchasing a new van we could end up needing a new towcar? Or do we attempt to get our deposit back on this van.

With the company telling us the van is safe to tow but the caravan club saying its too high?

How heavy 1546kg Ford Mondeo edg 1.8 diesel
MTPLM of van 1490, that's the maximum the van can weigh when loaded
so between the miro and MTPLM you have 217 KG to play with.
now as long as you don't load your van to the max you will be well under so stop worrying for nothing.
once you have loaded it with what you need take the car and van to a public weighbridge and you will find you will be around 80% or below, even with an awning on the floor of the van
even if you didn't pass your test until after the cut off date your still under the 3500 kg
so go and enjoy.

Just found this for you, max tow weight 1600

Don't load your van up to it's MTPLM or you will be towing near the same weight as your car .
Just be frugal with what actually put in the van and put the rest in the car and you should be Ok

If it was a MK3 Mondeo you may have had an issue, But being a MK4 as long as you get the weights right you should be OK. As long as you dont load the van but of stuff.

A mate said he saw a guy pull up in a Vauxhall Astra Estate. The caravan looked a bit heavy for the car. Then out came the awning. Sun loungers, Full size garden BBQ, 13kg gas bottle, Then the bikes. He said it was like watching Dr Who.. Its bigger on the inside...

Load up for a trial run and pop down to a weighbridge.

Thanks everyone feeling a bit better now.

I too have seen those vans arrive Grampian. I once saw one with a full wooden patio table and two benches.

I didnt see it arrive but one year. A large twin axle arrived whilst we were out for the day.

Awning had gone up. We went to the club and on our return it had sprouted bedroom extensions on both sides.

The following morning the awning gained a front extension and an extra car arrived.

We went out for the day on on our return it had gained a wall of windbreaks around the entire van and a further 6 to 8 feet away from the awning extremeties.

The one at the side was for the BBQ then SAT/SUN 2 more cars arrived.

I should have taken a picture, I have no idea how many they had sleeping there but its was probably under £1 a night each

Put everything in that you think you will need awning included if you have one, I would say it will come in around 1420 kg leaving you 70 kg to play with

Ok so you know what the max weight of your caravan is, the only way you'll know what your car weights is but putting it on a weight bridge, Read this below i wrote this years ago when i was looking to get a mondeo

I'm looking at changing my car at the mo and was looking at the new mondeos and mondeo estate's at the weekend the brochure weight for the 2ltr tdci is 1557, however i've just taken a 2008 titanuim x hatch 2ltr tdci to the weight bridge next door and weighed it, 1630 kg empty with a full tank of fuel.the estate is around 20kg more.

This will make a 92% match with my caravan. which i'm more than happy with.

Take your car to a weight bridge to double check the weigh then work your percentage from that

I have to say that was a real shocker

Bessie

To get your true weight you need the car empty with 90% fuel weigh in it then add 70kg for the driver and 5kg for luggage, id be amazed if your car is'nt at least 50kg over the brochure weight, mines a whopping 157 above, dont forget your towbar weighs a bit.

Once you have this then you can work out your true percentage

Bessie

Thank you.

We have taken our first trip into the peak district, as its just a weekend the van is loaded quite lightly; no awning, chairs or major food supplies.

The car towed well even managing queuing traffic going up a fairly steep hill.

We will be taking the unit to a weigh bridge before adding the heavier bits and pieces. I will update the thread then in case anyone else needs the same advice.

Put everything in when you take it, then you will know if you're over or under, when you go, if over just remove items until correct, but I would expect you will still be under with everything in
