hi, does anyone have the latest model vw sharan and what weight do you tow. i am looking 1 with DSG gearbox as it is listed at 1808kgs kerb weight and my caravan is 1800 kgs. i currently tow with a toyota land cruiser but it has a drink problem,

Hi Steve, I can't offer you any advice about the Sharon but we are in a similar position. We currently have an E Class Estate which is around 1835 Kg but its not a great tow car. We have looked at the Kia Sorento and the Hyundai Santa Fe. Both heavy enough and delivering 46 mpg when not towing.

We had an older Alhambra though and although we never towed with it it was a great car.

We had a SEAT Alhambra (06) for a few months - not a good towcar (1400kg van)

The problem wasn't power (ours was the 2.0 PD engine)but loss of traction when the van was hitched up.

The front end became very light, and felt distinctly dodgy in wet weather.

The final straw came when we attended a CCC Regional Rally, and had to stop for the Stewards on a grass track that was slightly (and only slightly) muddy.

After receiving directions, I hopped back in the Alhambra - and proceeded to churn up the grass as the front wheels simply couldn't get a grip.

We ended up being towed onto our pitch by a Discovery, which is when we made the decision to change the Alhambra for a 4x4.

You need to be careful of the nose weight on Alhambra or the feel light on the front
