quandary--2004 Bailey Ranger 510/4 MTPLM 1237, which new car do I choose.
Option 1; VW Tiguan 2.0TDI Match diesel

Option 2; Honda CRV 1.6CDTI diesel

mmmmmmm really unsure. The VW can tow 2000 and the Honda can do 1700, both come to a good match on the towcar and caravan match internet site.

Just cannot make up my mind.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.
thanks

Neither....a RAV4 :)  More MPG, bags of power & torque, my 58 plate one has a kerbweight of 1710kgs and although you wouldnt, will tow 2000.  Excellent all rounder.... easily see 49mpg average solo and often 39 towing.

However, that probably doesnt help :) and if it had to be a choice of the VW or Honda, it would be the VW :)

Higher towing capacity is better. This is calculated by seeing how heavy a trailer a vehicle can pull from a standing start on a 12% gradient! repeatedly! with the car fully loaded.

So the bigger the towing figure the less hard your car's mechanicals will have to work.

I'd say go for the VW.

1600cc diesel in the Honda? Sounds a bit small for towing around 1300kgs IMO.

Sounds only big enough to pull it's own weight, regardless of the kerb weight and what the it's towing capacity is in the handbook, show it a hill / gradient and it's MPG will be decimated.

Damned if I do...

Damned if I don't!!!!

Neither.
Skoda Yeti 140bhp 4x4. Basically the same as the Tiguan but cheaper.

Why not go for a new Honda CRV Dtec 2.2 which has more BHP than the VW Tiguan 140 and a heavier kerbweight and a 2000kg towing capacity.
Good on fuel 48mpg easily achievable solo and 28-29mpg towing with a 1400kg van .
Build quality good and reliability above VW or Skoda

Thank You very much all of you--right, the car will be a Motability car, the Honda CRV 2.2 is way over our budget. Our van is MTPLM at 1237 but we are no way anything near that, Been today to see the new Nissan X-Trail, again 1.6 dCi Acenta 5dr, 5 seater. mmm here we go again. The towing ability for the Honda is 1700kg and 100kg towball, The X-Trail is 2000kg and 100kg towball, the VW is 2000kg and 100kg on towball, we have a Citroen Grand Picasso at the moment a 2.0HDI with 80kg on the towball, we get around 44ish towing, the new version of this car is lighter now, and the towball is now 70kg from ours at 80kg--god knows how we would reduce that. The car needs to be a taller car as the wife has very bad hips and knees, she has arthritis in her joints and her shoulders cannot help her get out of a low vehicle. I think after taking you advice we are possibly looking a the VW, after towing for many years the 2.0 engine says pick me. cheers

THANK YOU VERY MUCH-- as of this afternoon, we have been and ordered our new car for November. Taken all your comments into consideration and spoke at lengths to the other half. We have ordered a VW Tiguan 2.0TDI Match bluemotion. Yes, all done, no more worrying about which one. Well roll on November. cheers all.
