Hi

Please can you help me, the more I read the more I'm getting confused!!

We are driving to the South of France next week and drive a Freelander 2 with a top box and and pulling a 400kg trailer. This is our first camping holiday abroad so any advise would be great

I have been told that the French have new towing Laws this year and its all to do with your GTM - Gross Train Mass

I cant find my GTM anywhere....This is what I have seen on-line, so I assum I need the stickers???? -

Important advice - Please read below about NEW LAWS in France for Caravans and Trailers

All vehicles driving in France that are towing a caravan or trailer, where the vehicle has a GTM over 3.5 tonnes (*see below) MUST display 80 and 90 'speed limit' stickers.

This is because French Law stipulates that they are required to drive at the lower speed limits of:

  • 80 km/h on single carriageways
  • 90 km/h on dual carriageways/motorways

The 80 sticker must be applied to the back of the caravan or trailer in the bottom Left Hand corner, with the 90 sticker either placed above or to it's right. To use: simply wipe area dry and clean, then flexsticker and peel paper from 'crack lines' on back.

*GTM (Gross Train Mass) is the maximum permitted 'fully loaded' weight of your wehicle ADDED TO the maximum permitted caravan/trailer towing weight for your vehicle.

This information can normally be found in your vehicle handbook. As a guide, most family sized cars (e.g. Ford Mondeo) will have a GTM in EXCESS of 3.5 tonnes.

NOTE: This law is based on the 'theoretical' total GTM and, even if you are towing a smaller trailer with a lightly loaded car, stickers MUST still be applied.

Fines of 80-100 Euros can be incurred if you fail to follow this advice before driving to France!.

Any advise would be great

Thanks

Somewhere on your Freelander, possibly at the bottom of the drivers B post, will be a plate with a few weights on it. One of those is the MASS IN RUNNING ORDER (or kerb weight) another is the GROSS MAXIMUM TRAIN WEIGHT.
If the kerb weight of your FL plus the maximum towed weight of your trailer exceeds 3500kg then you "should" have the extra plates.
In your case your GMTW will be below the figure. Stop worrying and enjoy your holiday

Displaying stickers applies to French residents only, observing the speed limit is for all.

Correct. UK drivers do not have to stick these plates to their caravans - which I discovered after buying them.
Someone did suggest that it was best to fit them, so that following drivers were aware that a lower speed was applicable. Haven't fitted them myself - yet, but that observation does make sense.
Of course, if you are advertising your requirement to drive slowly, it is imperative that you rigidly adhere to it.
Bertie.

We were over there in June, did a 2000 mile trip with the big trailer, didn't see that many caravans on the roads, even less with stickers on, but most we saw on sites were Dutch or German and they didn't have stickers.

We have been going to France twice a year for the last four years since that law came out and as stated the stickers are only for French residence, and they do not seem to take any notice of it any way, we have often been passed by large French vehicles towing large trailers often with boats on while sticking to the 90 kmh limit.

They would not have stickers if the Gross train weight of the outfit was not over 3.5 tonnes. Don't know if German or Dutch governments have this law for their own country. If not, as is for the UK, it would not apply to these visitors.

Sorry but French laws apply to everyone. Why risk an argument with a foreign policeman for the sake of a few bob.
Have a look at the Caravan Club website which clearly explains which vehicles are restricted to 80 or 90 kph.
The weight of the trailer is irrelevant.

The French speed limits still apply in relation to the the appropriate outfit weights, but UK visitors are NOT required to fix these stickers on their vans.

Technically they are required, but as there is no fine applied if you do not have one/two, very few people bother with them especially the French

That reminds me, must check mine to make sure it's not date expired

Well yes technically they are required but there is no fine for not carrying one. So above answer is correct in practice if not in theory :)

Also original reply to OP is wrong as the weight of the actual trailer/caravan has no bearing on the calculation. A Freelander will be over 3.5t gross train mass

If your car has a Gross Train Weight of 3500kg or more in France you are limited to the lower speed if you are towing ANYTHING
there should be a plate on the car usually under the bonnet or on the drivers door frame .this has several weights listed .Ie front axle rear axle ect The largest figure is usually the gross train weight
But to be clear if you tow ANY weight trailer you are limited to the lower speeds & should have the stickers on the rear

Caravan Club advice is stickers aren't mandatory.

"We have checked with several Government Departments and Ministries (Interior, Gendarmerie, Industry and Transport) and we have concluded that the stickers are not mandatory but the speed limits are applicable"

Hijacking his thread, how would a speed camera know your train weight is over 3500kgs?

We were driving through France at a steady 100kph in a 130 zone and were flashed by a speed camera? Our outfit is an x5 so we are well over the threshold.
