Hi all, I am looking to build my own caravan, and I am wondering about length. I know I can go to 7 meters plus hitch on the back of a car, but my pickup is registered as an lgv, so does this mean I can tow longer than 7 meters plus hitch, if so, what can I go to, thanks for any help I may receive. :)
Can't help on the legalities, but on a practical note, if you go much longer than this then you are likely to struggle to fit on a lot of pitches on site.
I was looking to go to around 24ft plus hitch, just to allow room for my friends larger family to use it when I am not using it, looks like I may nr making sliding side pods to add room instead then
You could look up the info on Bailey Retreat caravans and find out about the legalities of towing them..pretty close in size to your planned caravan.I have seen them behind large vans and a range rover.
Hi all. Thanks for all the replies, I have just found at. That although my pickup will easily and happily tow a large van, you are however restricted to 23ft excluding drawbar and 8ft wide. To pull anything longer, you need a vehicle over 3501kg that has a permament tacho. So no pulling a 8.3m Lmc if I won lots of cash lol
I was thinking that, but I am post 97 by 4 months :(, I have taken trailer license tho, so should be ok, hmmmmmm will have to price up building a 5er :)
If you are building new, then it will need type-testing, if you are modifying something already existing then you'll probably be OK as long as you keep a photographic record of the work to prove the age.
It started in October 2012 and the last section of that legislation comes this year in October.
There are all sorts of hassles once you get into C1+E group, the trailer fully loaded must not weigh more than the UNLOADED weight of the towing vehicle.
We've just bought a Mercedes Vario 614D minibus to convert to a motorhome and also tow our trailer. Uladen weight is around 4 tonnes so OK.
