I wonder if different car manufactures ask the clutch manufactures to make clutches to different tolerances and that could be why certain ones fail sooner than other makes.

Or could it be that certain types of drivers/owners are drawn to particular makes?

You get more failures with Ford and Vauxhall because they sell more cars.

My ex MIL killed a brand new clutch in a Fiesta in less than 7000 miles.

I watched her reverse out of teh drive one day. The rev counter must have been bent double as she slipped the clutch to death.
And she did that almost every day. No wonder it died so quickly.

With a DMF letting the engine lumber along at low revs can kill them, But so will racing starts.

Very true,and at the end of the day the DMF is a working part so will wear out through use i.e it's a wear and tear item. Therefore will need replacing at some point. I wonder how many actually fail ie cause a breakdown?

I don't think a DMF will actually fail instantly that would cause a roadside breakdown unless the extreme happened whereby it ceased up completely through negligence of not having it fixed sooner. The internal worn parts just get louder with time but the problem is then is if you don't replace the offending part then it can lead to the shortening of the life of other related parts. This of course then pushes up the price of extra parts and to replace a DMF and clutch assembly is quite a big job which takes at least a day and a half to a couple of days labour.

On my previous Mondeo the clutch started to make expensive noises the day before I was due to leave for our fortnights holiday in Devon and Cornwall towing the caravan, I just went for it hoping it would get us there and if it failed to get it fixed down there.
It did the 300 odd mile drive to Cornwall then after a week we moved to a site in Devon for the second week, during this time it was getting louder and louder but not slipping
On the way Back we took a detour and had a couple of days in Tenby then back to Merseyside, car still pulling great but clutch making a lot of noise
Got home and took it to a garage for a new clutch and DMF a week later,
I must have covered about 1000 miles mostly towing from when I first heard it failing

Car all done and towed just under 300 miles with no issues apart from getting used to the biting point being lower.
