ok so 1300 is the max weight my car can tow, and my van weighs maw 1100kg (I missed a 1 off above) i only have 200kg to play with?
You are confusing a few things
Max 1300 towing is the max actual weight which can be towed behind your car
1100 is the max weight your caravan can be when fully loaded
1100 minus 837 = 263 which is the max which can be put into the caravan

Has the law on towing and weights drastically changed over the last few years? It all sounds a bit confusing and OTT to me too. I don't own a caravan now but had one about 4 or 5 years ago I think. I looked up the maximum towing weight for my car, bought a caravan which was less than that, stuck it on the back and went towing. I obviously didn't load everything at one end of the caravan, in fact I don't think I loaded the caravan with anything much...all my gear went in the car. All I kept an eye on was when hooked up the caravan and car were parallel with the road and not obviously overloaded or at some silly angle. I had no problems towing.
thanks very much for your help guys, seen acouple of scary utube videos and worried myself silly. i know these people were probably doing a silly speed in the wind, but i really dont want to be one of those people with kids in the car, because i was too stupid to follow basic (complex for me lol) guidelines
yes i found it all too confusing with different jargon meaning the same thing :/
if someone comes up with an app for it they might make some money lol
i can now load my van up properly with confidence thanks to you guys xx
Thats the issue you hear about the accidents but you dont know how it happened.
possibly towing way too fast and a bit of wind unsettled it then they overcompensated for it?
Or did another vehicle cause the incident?
I had some stupid old fart try to remove my nearside awning rail once.
Pottering along at 50mph in a 60 limit. But i knew my junction was coming up so just followed.
He pulled off into a layby. Silly bugger didnt stop in the layby and carried on through and was now alongside my caravan and tried to rejoin the carriageway where my caravan was.
Luckily he only caught it with his mirror. But hard enough to lose the mirror.
I have no idea what was going through his head when he saw this huge cream box beside him when he tried to join the carriageway.
