perhaps not illegal but do you really want the worry that those few extra items that you might carry may just put you over your cars limit ?
Sorry but I couldn't be bothered with worry and hassle so why not do the right thing and either purchase a caravan that has a MTPLM below your cars limit or change your car for something more suitable

Think about it .... if you have a MTPLM lower than the towing limit then you might be tempted to go to the towing limit and exceed the MTPLM !!!!

Its a daft discussion because the same argument can be used both ways

If I'm understanding correctly, the general concensus seems to be that towing over the manufactures maximum car towing weight would probably be O.K if the GTW wasn't exceeded, (if the outfit is weighed by the the boys in blue, following an incident).

If it were over the GTW, then all you are likely to get is a fine and a few points on your licence, which isn't too big a deal.

What to me is more relevant, is if an accident occurs, whether it's your, or another drivers fault, I'll bet a pound to a penny that your car and caravan insurance will be made invalid by your insurance companies, and if a third party suffers a serious injury or death, then you could face a civil action to claim compensation from your estate. This would be a bad thing, and could render you homeless and penniless. Personally, I don't think it's worth the risk.

I've had to buy a lighter caravan than the one I wanted, just to stay within the maximum towing weight of car and plated MTPLM weight of caravan.
