We are seriously thinking about converting to caravanning from tenting.
We have a 2011 Golf 2ltr TDI. I have been researching on the net & a very good friend has been giving me great advice and it is clear that the Golf is a good tow car as long at the MTPLM of 1180 max being the magic 80% is adhered to correctly.
So far that is all theory, so anyone out there had experience towing with a Golf

No experience but the recommendation is actually 85% hover, according to Parkers motoring site the 140 bhp weighs 1299kg giving a recommended max tow of 1104kg. The 110 bhp is a little lighter.
Suggest you double check your handbook. Parkers has been known to be wrong.

my partner has a 09 plate 140 bhp sport line estate and we towed a swift charisma 1335 kgs to south of france no probs. great tow car as the stiff sports suspension didn't move much, has plenty power
We tow our swift charisma with our 10 plate Skoda superb 1.9 105 bhp, it doesn't know the van is on the back.
3 weeks ago because I know the road, it took it up Sutton bank, only went to second for the tight left turn half way up, and yes I know its not a caravan route and would not advise mere mortals to try it.
Your Golf being the 110 or 140 bhp will tow the van no problem
Thank you so much for the advice. Really appreciate it. It is the 140bhp model.

how stupid are you. sutton bank has a sign at the bottom that says caravans banned. so why be so stupid, signs are up for a reason.
Because he is the all knowing 4x4 hating Skoda Bob. There is a word that rymes with bob but I won't put it on (or a word that is similar to banker!!!!)

Only a total idiot would try taking a caravan up Sutton Bank, and it breaks road regulations as caravans are barred from it - you obviously missed the glaring road signs.
As often happens on this road vehicles have to stop half way up, I very much doubt if your feeble 105bhp Skoda could restart on a 25% slope with the caravan on the back.
For those that do not know the road, there are large prohibition signs for caravans before you turn onto the road (from both directions), and the road itself is a 1 in 4 gradient with a couple of hairpin bends, and narrow sections. Lorries frequently have to stop on these narrow sections to pass other traffic. It is one of the steepest trunk roads in the country apparently.
Just to update. We picked up our caravan on 20th & the Golf towed it beautifully. Thank you for all your advice & tips. We had a great time.

Suton Bank is not just not a caravan route caravans are prohibited traffic on Sutton Bank.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

You will be surprised to know I have been up and down Sutton bank more time than you have had hot dinners, up to 6 times a day, from Wombleton to Thirsk, from the top down to Helmsley you can knock the car into neutral and it will make it all the way into Helmsley square, on tick over
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

Knocking the car into neutral actually uses more fuel than leaving it in gear with your foot off the accelerator as this shuts off the fuel to the engine, in neutral the engine is ticking over thus using fuel.So what is the point?
