You will be surprised to know I have been up and down Sutton bank more time than you have had hot dinners, up to 6 times a day, from Wombleton to Thirsk, from the top down to Helmsley you can knock the car into neutral and it will make it all the way into Helmsley square, on tick over
Bob,
From another Skoda owner, stop being a fool.
Towing a caravan up Sutton Bank is illegal and people have been prosecuted for it.
Putting a car into neutral and coasting down can also result in a prosecution for "Driving without due care" as you have no engine braking. It is also an extremely stupid thing to do, and I say that as an off-road driving assessor.

Knocking the car into neutral actually uses more fuel than leaving it in gear with your foot off the accelerator as this shuts off the fuel to the engine, in neutral the engine is ticking over thus using fuel.So what is the point?
The first time i went up Sutton bank was in the 70s with a vauxhall vx490.I wasnt towing a van at the time but, what i do remember was by the time i hit the first bend to the left i was in second gear.
There used to be a farmer in those days who made a fortune towing anything from cars to buses up it,i think he charged 10/s in old money or 50p as we know it today.
Anybody that tries to tow a van up it to me is crazy never mind coming back down as it would push you down and cause your brakes to over heat
