Hi,

I'm a complete rookie caravanner planning ahead for next year and hoping to purchase a 4/5 berth single axle caravan.

I'm trying to find a good tow car that will also serve me well for my other commuting and general kids taxi duties.

I'm looking to get a 2011 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT 2.0 TDI Bluemotion Tech Estate for this new adventure (mainly due to it winning tow car awards on numerous occasions - unless someone is willing to advise me otherwise!).

But I have noticed that the Sport model has a 15mm lowered suspension in comparison to the other models. Is this likely to cause me any problems? All the other stats - towing capacity and nose weight - are indentical.

Any help very very much appreciated...

The suspension will probably be firmer than the other models in the range. Make sure its not too harsh for you.

If it has lower suspension the tyres maybe a lower profile also which will make it even worse.

Have a look again to see if there is a setting for standard and sport mode, some cars are electricly adjustable.

Spot on Alpiner - thanks for the message.
Three different suspension settings available - sport, comfort, normal. Happy days...

Have a drive before you buy. If you're happy it'll be fine to tow.

My Merc C-Class estate has the sports pack and many reviews say the ride is harsh. For me though it's fine and I suspect the wider tyres and stiffer lower supension actually help it tow better.

I had a 2.0TDI sport estate and it towed great.

The stiffer suspension is an aid to stability, as are the fatter, lower-profile tyres.

Unfortunately being one of the 2.0PD models it was a complete shed, needing two new engines in 78K miles, used a litre of oil every thousand miles, had an electronic handbrake which wouldn`t release and rattled like dried peas in an empty bean-can.

The newer ones appear to be much, much better. It wasn`t just British Leyland that used its customers to find their cars faults.............

Up to 2008 the 2ltr tdi had a problem with the oil pump and mainly disintegrated the engines, this was rectified on later models, this was not just confined to VW but skoda and seat

I've got a 57 plate Passat estate sport 2.0TDI, and I've had to fit the grayston rubber suspension inserts to help prevent the rear suspension from sagging, even though the caravan noseweight is within limits (85Kg)

Other than that, excellent car, with no problems whatsoever, in 90K miles. my previous car was an 07 reg Passat 2.0TDI, and I did 120K miles in that with no problems. just remember to keep topping up with expensive synthetic oil!
