So after much thought we have decided to change my car, so we can use that rather than DHs company car for towing.

Looking at ideas and think we have narrowed it down to these three, just wondered if anyone drives one of them and for any pros and cons with them.

The final three are: Volkswagon Passat estate, Honda CRV, Mazda 6.

We have had a 60 plate CRV for the last 12 months and love it! Although we haven't had to tow with it yet as our van is on a seasonal pitch the drive solo is brill and tons of space.
it is the 2.2 diesel.
You do need to bear in mind what Grampian says though; it doesn't affect us as we are 'old'!
Sue

No we are old too, so both post 1997 license holders!

In fact we have both booked to have towing lessons, I have never towed before, Hubby has but it was a horsebox, and he felt it wouldn`t hurt to have a refresher lesson.

All 3 cars are 2010 models,, we both have advanced driving tests(his company pay for them and drive alive every 3 years)

Hi

All 3 will be nice tow cars, we just recently purchased a new 2014 CRV 2.2 from trading in our VW Passat (2.0tdi 170)

We love the CRV as a family car and tow car, yes the vw was better on solo runs bringing in better mpg but we noticed that it would drop a lot more when towing. The CRV still gets just over 31 -32mpg when towing (Passat 28-29mpg)but when getting passed by lorries/coaches I dont seem to notice the wobble like we did in the passat.

If you need any further info on the crv/passat please let me know

Thanks
Simon

Post 1997 means you passed your test after 1997, Is that right?

That limits your towing weights and vehicle.

You missed out vital info like the caravan or trailers gross laden weight and the actualt engine/model specs your looking at.

Auto or manual also makes a big difference on some cars.

Haven`t got bought a caravan yet, sorry I meant pre 1997,(senior moment), we have been looking at our options using Hubbies company car, but then we thought I had said my Daughter could have my car (Ford KA) to learn to drive (she will get free lessons and test via her school next year) so instead of having to change the towbar every 3 years it makes more sense for me to get a bigger car.

the CRV is 2.2 diesel, and the Passat is a 2.ol diesel.

Have you looked at the size and type of caravan your thinking of buying though?

Will be a pain to find your perfect caravan then it turns out the car is too light.

We are going to the show in October, but both cars are capable of towing the 4 caravans we have as a short list. Just wondered really what other people are using if anyone had one of these, the only thing I have noticed is the CRV already has a tow bar fitted it has 60000 miles on the clock, is that a lot if it has been used for towing?

Have just parted with a 2009 crv diesel with 48,000 on the clock and 26000 of that was towing .
Never had any problems with it in 5 years and towed to spain every winter with a 1500 kg van , good reliable towcar .
Have replaced with a new CRV SR dtec 2.2 which I expect to be just as good so go for the Honda

We had a 2009 VW Passat Estate and loved it. We never towed anything heavier than a camping trailer with it though. If a Passat was heavy enough for our Buccaneer I'd have another one. We had the 170 bhp diesel sport.

As I don't think your van is loaded to the max of 1625 I know one would tow your van NP, especially the 170 bhp
some of the caravan sales us lawnmower tractors to move vans around, so the Passat would have NP
