Hi purchased a volvo d5 2007 last weekend,mot dated 15/8/14 showed 103,00
miles same as odometer, previous mot showed 88,000 so tied up,car looks and drives great, however, cleaning the engine bay on sunday found a sticker showing cambelt was changed at 89,000 miles in 2010! so the alarm bells started ringing, found out you can do a mot history check at vosa(wish i had known this before) and subsequently found that the certificate showing 88000 had been falsified and should have been 188,000,so the car has actually done 203000 miles
the dealers phone is permantly off,and the address on the sales invoice doesnt exist, the only name i have for the guy is is first name, which is probably false,if i cant come up with a name and address, trading standards cant help,so it looks like i am going to be stuck with the car, paid £4795 and is probably worth half of that,so be warned,if you are buying a used car, check and check again

Contact the police & trading standards. They won't do anything but best they have the knowledge

Contacted police, said it was a civil matter, have to go through cab to inform trading standards, they are not open on a wednesday,so going in morning, dont think i will be able to get any redress though, now stuck with a car that has done 200000 miles and have no idea of its service history, cambelt change etc, just been quoted £800+ for a full service and cambelt change at main dealers, ouch!

Why use a main dealer?
Find a Volvo independent near you and use them, or any good indi.

You gave me a fright argh So i went on to vosa site and checked previous mileage on mot certs and ...phew relieved mine was a genuine 82 thou on my used 2006 volvo S80 D5...So thanks for waking me up to the fact you can check the mileage
Although Im sorry you didnt have the same outcome. I hope cab and trading standards can help you out. Best of luck

Thanks have just called an independent and they quoted £550-£600 for ,cambelt full service and he advised fitting a new waterpump which would be included in the price he gave me,but would a independent garage do as thorough a service as a main dealer? he is not a volvo specialist, there arent any in my area, just the main dealer.

Quite probably do a better job if you go to the right one as he has his reputation to consider and has to stand on his own two feet to survive.

In my experience independent dealers do a better job. They rely on their own reputation and not that of the brand logo above the door.

After some digging i have found out the guys name, and he has an ebay account, passed this on to trading standards and they will be able to get his address from ebay, hopefully he will be prosecuted which may deter him from doing it again, and i will be able to pursue him through the courts

Main dealers often sell on their very high mileage trade ins on ebay. Presumably he buys this sort of thing & clocks them back to average mileage. You can check previous listings on ebay so if you can find your car bought by him with much higher mileage you have got him.

Why bother with this. It's very easy to check mot history with mileage since it's first mot. That will be irrefutable proof of correct mileage.

Actually most quality dealers either sell cars privately to a 3rd party who may put them through ebay or they put them in the auctions.
