Following on from a recent thread I posted...I have been on a mission to inform everybody and anybody who would listen about licence categories disappearing when you return your licence for whatever reason.
Having just visited my Dad..he informed me that he had just renewed his licence with a photocard type---and guess what? Categories C1 and D1 have disappeared--that covers 7.5 tonners and mini-bus entitlement. These are both vehicles he drove after his retirement..he isnt planning to drive either vehicle again..but the point is---he couldnt if he wanted to!.
Please remember..if/when categories disappear from your licence...it is up to you to try and get them back and DVSA arent very helpful.

Is he over 70? To retain those entitlements after that age a medical is required, this is same medical as HGV drivers have to take from age 45. Medical is carried out by GP but not for free, usually around £100. If he sent his renewal in without the completed D4 medical form then this is why they will have been removed presumably?

Hi Bryan, very good reminder, there was a programme on TV a few years ago about this very same thing, can’t remember which channel, turned out about 60 people had got in touch with the programme complaining about renewing licence and categories disappearing from licence and the trouble they had trying to get the DVLA to reinstate them, programme makers interviewed them all, hired a bus to take all the people to DVLA offices to get answers, after invading the DVLA offices with their complaints they spoke to a senior manager, and within two weeks they all had their licences categories reinstated.

Hi RonPlatt, Handy bit of information that, did not know about a D4 medical form requiring to accompany the licence renewal for.
Thanks Bryan and Ron, something to keep in mind for the future.

Changed to photocard for the first time sounds like he has just reached the age of 70 and has done the self assessment medical

To retain C1 and D1 etc for a further 3 years he needs to take and pass the D4 medical

B+E is not affected as that remains valid with the B licence

Plenty of places doing medicals around £50-£60, I had mine done in Northampton recently.

I think I will keep my money and just stick to driving cars when I reach 70.

While I can see that having a medical has a financial implication, when I had mine it was found that I had a heart murmur, so into my own Doctor last week and now having an Echo-cardiogram on the 18th September.

Never had need of a heart check over the years and earlier medicals didn't pick it up, so worth every penny in my own case.

I recall some years ago that over 60's were supposed to be given annual MOT's anyway. I remember my GP calling me in for one but he hasn't bothered since. However, I have had to see him a few times over recent years so perhaps he doesn't feel an MOT is necessary.

Whenever I hear of people paying for a medical examination, and especially if a problem is then diagnosed, I start to wonder what is the point of having a personal NHS GP if they aren't diagnosing serious medical problems.

The comments made have prompted me to look up the latest rules and regs..DVLA have an info leaflet--also on-line--titled INF4D which explains the requirements. Ive learned something new..mainly stuff which doesnt concern me yet--but it certainly caught my Dad out.
I wonder how many drivers of large motor-homes will be caught out with these rules. No disrespect meant-but most of the drivers owning one of the larger and more expensive units are probably of a certain age! and regarding a large towcar/caravan outfit--I would have to go on a college course to work that one out!!!
Take care and Be aware!!
