Well we bought an auto 1.9tdi x plate gal over a year ago. Fitted the towbar, fixed the aircon and fettled it. It was a lovely car for just about a year. Put it through the mot and a couple of weeks ago the gearbox started playing up. The report from the auto specialists is it's FUBAR...knackered. So, choices. Its £1800 for the reconditioned box. Another Galaxy and keep this one for spares? Or a very cheap runabout workhorse for a few hundred and replace every year? There's a lad at work with a 1997 volvo 2.5L with nearly 200K on the clock. He knows where theres another for about £300. Can of worms?
The new kitchen means not much money for a newish car and I'm sick of fleabay. Any advice? John

My brother was told his auto box was fubard, quick oil change and filter and its still going strong.everyone changes engine oil not many think about gearbox.
You could buy another cheap car & have similar failure. If Galaxy is otherwise good then maybe cheapest to fit new gearbox but as pointed out, 2nd opinion might be wise.
Go and find an indi and get a second opinion, more than likely the filter inside the box will be bunged up a gearbox service should be no more than between £100 and £150 depending on labour rates.
Then there is the scrappy for a replacement should it be knackered, there again no more than £150 for a good second-hand box, plus fitting on top
