Pricewise I'd be looking at paying anything from £500-£1200 for the right Volvo 850/V70 they are a great car and are starting to rise a little in price.
I have a 1998 V70 T5 Auto standard with no modifications although I only paid £206.00 for mine via Ebay, 240bhp, loads of power when towing and a decent kerbweight, it makes light work of towing our van and fuel wise it's not that bad 24mpg around town, 35mpg on motorway and even towing it returns 24mpg.
In my opinion an excellent towcar if you can live with the mpg, being the T5 it certainly can go when you want it to.
Have a look at the Volvo forums for more advice and a buying guide.
