You can't get out of it Gareth, poster you quoted stated 'could be illegal' & indeed non standard tyres/wheels could be illegal for reasons I stated.

The fact the that the poster you quoted clearly had no idea what he was posting about did not make his post factually incorrect...

The alloys and tyres involved where all brand spanking new the skin treads were 30mm walls .                                                                                                                                         The alloys were size for size  with steel wheels but going from 80mm to30mm walls was illegal because it effected the speedo and oddometer readings and could of effected the anti break seizure control. the suspension. The car manufactors set everything up in on board computor to a set of tyre sizes and to vary more than 3% or  over is Illegal.

As mentioned above cars with very low wall profiles seem to have no suspension this because it is stiffend or reinforced  for better road holding than the natural cushion effect of normal profile tyres.

 As for insurance company oking such a change maybe it was the teaboy who answered the phone. I have never been spot checked in 45 years of driving and to get spot checked five times must be to do with your driving or vehicle.

I  have been stopped for speeding for doing 60 on a 50 stretch of dual carriageway and had my tyres checked when I asked where the 50 sign was, when  pointed out I said how are expected to see it when covered by branches and you dont know because you arn,t a local I was politely told to get on my way.

Yes, trying to lower a car by fitting lower profile tyres to standard size wheels is not really the way to go, one could fall foul of the law on several counts. The sensible idea is to retain tyre diameter by fitting ultra low profiles on larger wheels & lowering suspension.

No doubt grandson will learn eventually.

Cant dumb it down anymore for you ludovine so we'll agree to disagree. Have a nice day chap and happy camping.

Btw, the police round here seem to be on the warpath and all the stops have been around xmas, nothing to do with driving style as they're pulling multiple drivers in a layby pull.

the term low profile used to mean less than the standard 80 though if you go back far enough in time the standard was 100.. now i recon it means elastic bands.. :)

i have both extremes 31 x 10.5 x 15 on my 4 x 4 and some 225 x 40 x 18 on an old lowered amd merc i have.. :}

my caravan van has wobbly 175 x 80 x 13 radial tyres..

trog
