We have a squeaking Alko Hitch.I keep the Tow Ball clean and I have cleaned inside the hitch with halfords brake pad cleaner.Anyone got a solutuion ?

A gentle rub over the pads with a fine emery cloth worked for mine.

Don't forget to clean the ball as well. Gine emery followed by brake cleaner does it for me.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

You don't say if you have recently bought the caravan or not or whether it's a problem only just occurred but it sounds like you have done all the right things to stop the hitch squeaking. If you have recently bought the caravan then the previous owner could have connected the hitch onto a greasy towball in which case the internal friction pads could be contaminated so cleaning them with brake & clutch cleaner won't solve the problem. However, if the problem has only recently occurred then try rubbing the pads with some fine emery cloth as suggested already but ensure that you clean any remaining dust out with the brake & clutch cleaner afterwards.

I have read in past threads of creaking/squeaking Alko and Winterhof tow hitches.I have had both but never experienced this problem. I have always purchased Chrome Vanadium or Stainless Steel 50mm balls when having new gear fitted to new tow vehicle.

They cost a few quid more but I only had to wipe with damp cloth to remove any ferodo dust after removing dirt cover and they never rusted. I never remembered to clean ball after unhitching and putting on cover. I was maybe lucky or the type of ball you use is the secret [who knows] ?
