The max tow weight as in your car handbook(1500kg I think)will tell you that caravan is within your towing limit, but for safety it is better to have caravan somewhat lighter than towcar & a figure of 85% is suggested so using a calculator one might conclude car should tow no more than 1250kg.
In practise though your actual on road car weight will be well over kerbweight & caravan might not be fully laden so some might consider it a safe tow. Your choice really, if you are an experienced & confident tower then you might be ok with it & outfit would be legal but probably a heavier car is needed for that caravan.
A fully loaded van would be at upper ends of your cars towing limit, so as above depends on your experience I guess and whether you are comfortable towing at 95%+, which I would guess is what many of the tow site comparisons are saying?
Ideally a heavier car would most likely be safer for a near 1500kg caravan
We have towed our old Pegasus (1480kg MPTW) with a 2009 Audi A4 Avant 2.0 tdi 140bhp multitronic auto with no isuues. Towed extensively through France, also been to Austria and Lake Garda and Tuscany. No lack of power.
1475kg figure? is from where... the V5 doc or plate on car. Does it inc the driver and fuel. If I remember correctly ours was 1640kg but Avant is bigger and auto also adds to weight.
PS if you fancy An A6 Avant I will probably have one for sale January ish......
Yes, but it does take a bit of wading through at times

As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
With the car having the 2ltr tdi 136 bhp it should pose no problems towing that van, go to a weighbridge and you will find the car a lot heavier than stated in the book, due to the nice big diesel lump in the front.
most vehicle manufacturers always quote the tow weight of the smallest engine vehicle normally the petrol version in the model range, that's why you get it weighed
And wrong again Bob!
All vehicles are plated with the weight of that particular exact model, and with anything from the VAG range that plate will be found on the bottom of the driver's side B post.

After checking with Audi, apparently this model wont due to the lower gearing and it being the blue motion engine with stop start built in. the 177 bhp will though
manufacturers are making vehicles lighter, and with smaller engines, but with the same power outputs as the old ones, these will still tow your vans, with a diesel its all about power to weight.
he could also opt for a Skoda superb with 140 BHP with dsg or the 170 bhp version identical engines in both just the power output
van

Thanks for all the help, info and advise.
We took all the info on board and after checking with a local caravan sales company and Audi themselves have decided to pull out of the deal. Will get the deposit back in a few days. So the search goes on. OH now looking at series 5 BMW but cant find a red one!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good decision. I'd already bought my C Class Merc 220 when we decided to move from tent to caravan which meant that mid-upper range 'vans were too heavy, including Challenger SE and just about everything Coachman build. A good match for our Challenger Sport 524 but wouldn't try a 584 with it.
