Looks like our Kia Sorento CRDI XE 2.5 has finally given up the ghost and needs to be replaced. We use it to pull Bailey Ranger 550/6, which it does like a dream.
We would consider another Sorento but are open to other suggestions. We need something to be a family car as well as a tow car, looking to spend no more than £12000. Preferably manual gearbox and diesel as well.
Any suggestions?

Your van is light for its size so doesn't need a 4x4 to tow it. A Mondeo or Passat sized car would suffice.

Do you need a 4x4 for any other reason? If not I'd save some cash and buy a family saloon.

A 4x4 would be nice but not vital. Looks like a Kia Sportage would do the job, what about some of their other models?

Ranger 550/6 Mtplm 1,298kg?

Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0TDi 4x4 manual, (2011/2012) mass in service (V5C) 1,495kg giving a tow ratio of 87%. 138bhp, torque 320nm/1,750-2,500rpm good smooth engines and a well designed DPF!

Lots of load / carrying space in the back GVW 2,095kg, GTW 3,695kg, up to 64mpg solo, 33-36 mpg towing, my caravan is 1,230kg. Good grip on muddy fields with the Haldex system, even better now with all season tyres on.

Have a look at a ford Mondeo, my mondeo weights in at 1700kgs and pulls a 1500kg caravan, it will achieved 32 mpg with the van on, will do more than 50mpg solo (but not with me driving) a good all rounder, will also pull a heavier van than the one you have now so pretty much future proof the estate is also 20kgs heavier,

The skoda's above are great cars but have a lower kerbweight (apart from the 4x4) so will limit you on your future vans

As above my Mondeo 140 tdci would do the job nicely. About 32 mpg towing a 1450kg van, and depending on the use my normal average doing a lot of shortish journeys and a few 25 to 30 mile trips ( with return ) I get a consistent 47mpg. Last month when I had a long trip ( 220miles return ) and all the rest of my normal trips I covered 550 miles in three weeks and filled it with 10gals. Great car to drive, it can be big and lazy or you can put your foot down and roar away and however you use it it does the job. 1685kg MIRO on the V5 and a max towing weight of 1800kg, MGW of 2125 and MTW of 3925. Very comfortable and relaxing to drive with plenty of power to cope with towing the van

Bill

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Beat me to it Steve...

I was gong to suggest a Volvo XC70 though..

Why does it have to be a manual though?

In this day and age of crowded roads, I think an auto would be better..

It's no good saying you get better MPG with a manual compared to an auto, because one day somewhere down the line, you lose all that so called 'fuel saving'...
