Hi there, we're looking to get a new car which can take all our tenting stuff but also be able to tow a caravan if we take the plunge in the next year or so.
It needs to be reasonably economical to run too as it will be our main family car. My husband has done some research and seems to think the VW Passat fits the bill and is within our budget of £11000. Looks like we could get a 2011 model (~70,000 miles) for that money. Just wondered if anyone has any better suggestions?
i tow with a passat diesel tdi, and it does the job fine, have had 42 mpg with caravan on, in fact i have been towing caravans for about 35 years and its the best so far
------------- you are only as old as the woman you feel.
Used prices for VW & same size/type Skoda are much the same. Skoda is not really the VAG 'budget' brand any more but op might have a larger choice if they consider Skoda as well with same engine.
Thanks for responses - will have a look at suggestions and see what's available. We had initially been looking at a Hyundai i40 or Skoda Superb but my husband seems more inclined to go with the Passat at the moment. Glad to hear you are happy with your Passat petra8315!
Why not look at the Mondeo it,s a lot heavier than the Passat so won't limit you as much when you look at buying a caravan, mine weighs in at 1705kgs estate is another 20kgs & you get a lot more toys for your money with the ford.
I had a 62 plate Passat estate 2.0td and it was great. Would have another like a shot. Only towed a folding camper with it but it was effortless. Handled far better than I was expecting.
I'm a big Skoda fan (we have a Fabia and I used to have an Octavia) but the Passat was a clear step up in refinement.
Replaced with a Mazda6 tourer which is quicker and more economical but more wind noise at speed.
What BHP does the bluemotion version have, i only ask as a mate bought a bluemotion polo, it had alot less power than the standard TDi, in fact his polo had only 3 cylinders thats why.
The difference between the VW and the Skoda is, the Skoda has much more room, and a massive boot space, you could get an almost new very low mileage one, for that money, the best would be the 2ltr tdi CR.and if you can find an estate version, you will have more room than the grand canyon
compare them on auto trader.
The VW has one of those stupid electric parking breaks that go wrong, instead of a conventional handbrake.

We found the Yeti was tight as a tenting machine, though we could have made more space if we'd dropped the seats. Fine for towing light caravan though. Getting the towbar was interesting, because of matching the complicated electrics.
We had an Octavia hatch before; really big boot that took nearly everything. The estate is even bigger, but not so much as to be worth the extra money TBH. I understand the stiffer suspension on the estate does make for a better towcar.
Skoda Octavia Scout 4x4 fold rear seats and get a coffin in the back. solo average 54mpg. towing average 32/36 mpg service 20,000 m or as engine management requires.
