I havent a clue about the awning as im new to the caravanning lark..

but peronally i doubt it will snow again this year, especially up here.. but if in doubt just stick a waterproof tarp over the roof of the awning, just incase we do get bad weather

How sheltered will it be?

A bit lower down than you and we have had some seriously strong winds already.

Supposed to be getting quite a bad winter. Rain wont be a problem as long as the awning is tight and cannot puddle. But be prepared for snow. Any forecasts then get it down just in case.

Do you use propane or butane?

Not a good idea to fabsil tent/awning fabric it clogs the fibres and seals them up, the fibres of fabric need to get wet and swell to make the fabric waterproof!
As long as the awning is very well pegged down with as many storm straps in differing directions, & check pegs & straps all the time you may be ok, we had our awning up beginning of this (2014) year with those very strong winds, we had straps going in all sort of directions and props to the main poles, straps going to trees, etc.! Our poles are steel not all'y that helped, even so a couple got bent!

What type of awning? If its a heavy full awning in good condition it should not need proofing. If its a cheap nylon porch awning then not really suitable for extended winter use anyway. If you are on your own it would probably be easier not to use awning then you would not need to worry about storms.

As pointed out, for winter you need propane gas & the nature of further advice would depend on if you have electric hookup or not.

I spent 6 months living in a 12ft caravan with 2 other men in the Hoek in 1999. It was bl***y cold! Propane was the only gas that worked and even that stopped in the coldest weather. Don't get tempted to close any vents and make sure you have electric or it will be even more unpleasant.

Also spent a year (1977) living in a cWW2 van behind a pub in the Vale of Evesham; much better but still really cold.

Hope your circumstances get better soon...

I live in my caravan full time also due to family problems(me and wife seperated and i was living in the house in spare room but it didnt work out) I have a porch awning with flexi glassfibre poles and in the high wind we had 3 weeks ago it is still standing, doesnt leak but does have condensation on the roof if i leave the heater switched off i have in the awning(I am on hook up as well) I use propane as butane will freeze in the uk... And being honest I love it.. the site i am on has a washing machine and showers and toilets.but i use my caravan shower and toilet. 1 tip raise aquaroll off the ground with a pallet and cover the pipe as they will freeze..
I have been in caravan now full time for 4 months but have stayed weekends over winter before now...
I have freesat tv mobile broadband and freezer..i have everything i would have in a house..
if awning is leaking then fabsil but be prepared to throw the awning after a year as the sun makes the fabric go hard and b rittle but ebay has a few cheap porch awnings..
