Looking to replace our 2009 Sorento and looking at the Santa Fe diesel auto.
Has anybody had both a face-lifted old model and then moved to the new/current model?
------------- David.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure!

Yeap, I had a 2010 premium manual from new, traded this for a new premium manual May last year.
Both have been great, the earlier model is a little more truck like. the new model is better in just about every respect (access to 3rd row of seats being an exception) but significantly more expensive.
What do you want to know?

I've just ordered one new. It's a manual 7 seat. I'm looking forward to getting it and by the sounds of it we won't be disappointed.

You won't be. Tows great, better than the earlier car. Smooth, quite, plenty of torque. Handles better than I thought it would. Obviously it's not a sports car but setting it up nicely for a corner and letting the torque pull you round is good fun. The electric handbrake takes a bit of getting used to. I' advise finding a hill and spending a bit of time practicing with hand brake and auto hold functions. When towing I found the auto hold the best option on a incline.
Hope you enjoy it! How long have you got to wait lead-times were hornedous.

I'm sure we'll enjoy it. It's got plenty of toys. Thanks for the great advice. We've got an automatic Mercedes at the moment which is far too flighty to be a great tow car. I had a Passat with an electric hand brake and I nearly rolled into a van on the first day aiming for reverse. Should be interesting.
Not getting the car until May. Shame as were already booked up for Easter and May Day.

We're coming out of an E Class Merc. Nice car but way to light at the front. It's flighty when solo. Something to do with being setup for motorway cruising.

I was just interested in the 'real world' differences people who'd had both models had found, in comparison to what the glossy brochures might say.
Also, in the 4x4/soft-roader market, the latest model isn't always the best from a towing point of view, a classic example being the difference in weights between the old and new Sorantos. Also, in relation to the new/current Sorento, the initial towing reviews were nothing startling.
Going back to the Santa Fe, there's a fair old difference in price between a new model, and one of the last of the old model.

We bough our first van, a Fleetwood Rhapsody 1320KG mtpm around 5 years ago so I'l only gor experience of towing this van and the only tow cars I've used are the 2 santa fes.
The earlier model towed well but when towing with the new car the van feels much more stable. It also has the advantage of Trailer Stability Assist and reversing camera is excellent for hitching up. Drive train is pretty much the same for both but the later car does feel smother and more refined. the manual gear change is improved.
Interior quality, ride, refinement are all an improved on the later model
As you point out the later car is more of a soft roader but in my opinion no worse for this either as a tow car (in my opinion it's better) or a large family car. The 2010 model was never a full blown 4x4 in the way the early Sorento was.
Is it worth the extra money?
That's a difficult call and down to personal choice. The 2010 on model is a great car and a good tow car. i did 70K miles in mine with no issues and loved it.
The later model is cheaper to run, insurance is less as are servicing costs and fuel consumption is 10% better and you will get a longer warranty. It's more refined, better equipped. For me it was a good based on the cost to change against the other 7 seat SUVs on the market.
