Hey people, im not too bad with traffic law being an ex HGV/PSV workshop manager, and now a law student.... but i found this flowchart which i think is really easy to follow....Im not sure if its been posted before? ..... Its just the job as long as you know the weights of the tractor and trailer.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Most B+E sets ups have a trailer MAM which is heavier than the vehicle kerb weight so why that was ever an issue for B towing remains a mystery
Sorry Rog I do not recognise this as true, it is certainly not true of people towing caravans.

Caravans have different safety advice than other types of trailer such as horseboxes
This would be a typical scenario for most trailer types
Vehicle
Kerb 1600
GVW 2200
Towing capacity 2000
Trailer
Empty 900
MAM 2500
As you can see the MAM is 2500 and the kerb/unladen is 1600
Max load for trailer would be 1100 in that scenario
