Guys im reasonably new to caravanning so im struggling to get to grips with tow weights ,nose weights basically all weights which leads to safe towing.
Im purchasing a Nissan X-trail Aventura dci 2.0 diesel 2009. Theres so many models I don't know what weights to go by ? and my caravan is a Bailey Ranger 510/4 2002 MIRO 992kg MTPLM 1215 how do I work it out ahhhh.
just wondering if someone can give me some info ,im sorry if these weights are wrong but this is whats stated in handbook.
Basically towing that caravan with that car will be fine, the caravan is much lighter than the caravan and the trail is a fine towcar.
However you need to be aware of the restrictions placed on you by your licence. If your licence is dated before 01/01/1997 then you are fine you have no problems. If your licence is dated post that date then unless you have taken an extra test you are restricted to an outfit where the combined maximum weights ( the max weight figures plated on the car and the caravan ) must not add up to more than 3500kg. So with a caravan that has a max weight of 1215kg your Xtrail must not have a max gross weight that is more than 2285kg. You can find this weight either on the V5 document or on the weight plate on the car ( the highest figure is the max train weight the Max gross weight is the next one ) .

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
The kerbweight of our manual 2008 aventura explorer 2.0 173bhp diesel is around 1750 kg, its the towing limit thats 2000 kg this just means the engine can cope with that much but it wouldnt be legal as you cant tow a van heavier than the kerbweight , the one you are looking to buy will be no more than 1750 kg but it will have no problem towing your caravan as its well below the kerbweight. We tow a 1600 kg caravan with ours no problem.

This is incorrect. A person with a B+E licence ( ie dated before 1997 or extra test taken ) has always been entitled to tow a trailer that weighs more than the kerbweight of the car. A person with a B licence ( ie one dated after 01/01/1997 ) was until jan 2013 restricted to caravans which weighed less than the unladen mass of the car, but changes in the law in Jan 2013 removed that condition from all B licence holders the only condition that they must adhere to is that the MAM of the outfit ( the sum of the plated max gross weights ) must not be greater than 3500kg.
For the OP the kerbweight is irrelevant what he needs to find out is the max gross weight of the car.

I think you meant to say...
For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max PLATED weight of the VEHICLE and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it.
JANUS is legally correct on the MAM/kerbweight issue but GRAMPIAN is not

Licence - if B only then the maximum GVW for the Xtrail is 2285kg
If over 2285 you will come under the B+E licence rules
http://www.usedcarexpert.co.uk/cars/nissan/x-trail/specs-stats/dimensions/
Nissan X-Trail 2.0 dCi 150 Aventura 5dr 2.0
Kerb Weight = 1711 Kg
Gross Weight = 2170 Kg
Towing Limit = 2000 Kg
If that is your model then its ok on a B licence
The CC club match advice is well under the 85%

Thanks i wasnt aware i could legally tow heavier than the kerbweight of my car on a B+E , i dont think i would want to tow above 100% though . To the op enjoy the x trail, it will be a great tow car, and from reading the advice above is a good match to your bailey whichever licence you have

B+E has never had that rule

Thanks for the replies guys , I passed my test 1987 so no issues there .It seems clearer now I'm satisfied that the X trail is more than adequate to tow my Ranger.
