I have a spare wheel but not a full sized one, its one of those 'space saver' things that are ok driving solo but illegal to tow a van with. I was wondering if there is sufficient room in the Honda CRV Mk3 tyre-well to be able to fit a full-sized spare in? Does anybody know?

yes and No , can be done but you have to modify the tyrewell cover/board to accommodate an 17 inch alloy.
on removing the tyrwell cover / board you will see it is supported by what appears to be rigid styrene blocks which need to be removed for the cover to sit nearly flush on top of the alloy wheel .
you can reattach these block easily with superglue
It's not illegal to tow with a space saver wheel fitted but should be avoided,if you do you should drive to the nearest place to get a repair or new tire fitted.

I can't see how it is illegal for towing provided you keep within 50mph limit for them, obviously spacesaver should be maintained at correct tyre pressure, check regularly so it is safe for use should you need it.
Spacesaver should be safe to use up to car weight limit so I can't how they should not be safe for towing.

Honda specify the space saver on the CRV should not be used when towing and also to turn off the VSA

As above, there is no problem with the wheel well(17" or 18") if putting in a full size spare other than the tyrewell cover. I took out the original and using it as a pattern cut out a piece of 12mm ply to fit. Cover will stil be a bit proud of the floor but this is not a problem , you also have to reverse the spare wheel fastener to secure the full size spare in the well. If you cannot find a full size from a local breaker give these a call
Thanks for all the replys, they are all most helpful and I have learned a lot.
I was told it was illegal to tow at all with the space saver arrangement but its certainly better than the can of spray gunk that came with my Accord. Fitting the donut would only be done as a lest resort towing, taking full heed of all your suggestions. I even thought of putting a full sized spare under the caravan bed but didn't because of the extra weight.
Bad design though making it so difficult to opt for what was once considered the norm, it's not like there is no room under the floor for a bit more depth in the tyre well.
