We have a Volvo S40 2009 2litre Sport, with a kerb weight of 1500kg. We are looking for a six berth caravan, very much second hand so we don't have a lot to choose from. The Sprite Major 6 2007 we are looking at buying has a MTPLM of 1427 and this means we would be towing 95% of our cars weight. I know 85% is preferable but what I am asking is are we being irresponsible towing this weight? My husband has been towing our old caravan for two years and is a confident driver. Is this enough? Does anyone else tow above 85%?
I don't think anyone can advise you on whether that would be safe or not.
Anyone can tow up to 100% of the car's tow weight, but whether it would be advisable to do so, only you can decide, going on your own abilities and confidence.

Are you saying that the actual weight of the car will be 1500 and the caravan weight will be 1427 at the time of towing it?
If not then what is the actual weight of each likely to be?
now what is the percentage match?

It depends how you drive it. A truck driver has the skill & experience to drive according to the load. A load of plastic bottles cubed out at 5tonnes can be pushed harder into bends than 27tonnes of bagged chemicals.
& so it is with towing a caravan, if you understand the dynamics involved then yes you can tow the outfit as described. I'm stay in the inside lane at 56mph with the trucks & practise plenty of 'forward observation', ie looking up the road as far as you can so you can see incidents as they begin to unfold before they happen right in front of you. Thats how you drive a 44tonne truck.
I suppose I am just thinking that if we are fully laden then is it going to cause us problems? Possibly not if the car is also fully laden and much heavier than the 1500kg kerb weight? We would be legal, but just wanted confirmation that we would also be safe if driven safely, which I can count on my husband for!
What worries me is stories of high winds with a ratio that errs towards the unit being dangerous. But I am pleased that no one seems shocked by my 95% admission.
We are looking at six berths because we have a family of five but don't like the two double bed arrangement as the Middle of the van is so boxy and built up. We like having the side dinette as it seems more spacious, and as our son is 6'4" he couldn't share a bed with one of the little ones. Lol.
Thanks for your replies so far.
We can't change our car too... No idea about fine tuning, it towed our Sterling Eccles Emerald with ease, with a MTPLM of 1300 which I reckon we probably were close to on occasion. Does the type of engine matter?
Yes, I’ve been towing in excess of 85% ratio for years. I
think my present outfit is about 98%. I reckon a lot depends on the geometry
and the dynamics and efficiency of the cars suspension. Basic physics says that
the bigger the lump of car at the front, the more control it will have over the
lighter lump of caravan on the back. But, it’s not basic physics. A modern car
with taut suspension and little overhang between the back axle and the draw
hitch will be much more stable than an old car with a big boot and a draw hitch
further back. If the caravan is carefully loaded, keeping any heavy items over
the axle and well away from the rear of the van it will have less tendency to
swing around than if the weight is badly distributed. It’s also worth
keeping the tyre pressures up to the maximum on both the car and the van. I personally
believe the 85% guideline was set up many years ago when car suspension systems
were quite crude and when engine output was quite low. Just take it steady at first and gradually
gain confidence.
Emmomcm I cant remember the make and model but there are caravans out there that have 3 bunks which im sure are in a smaller and lighter van that what you are currently looking at, others on here may know which ones im talking about? Adria Altea 542DT is one of them and the weight is a very comfortable match for your car
I can remember years ago I used to tow a car transporter trailer with my Mk2 Cortina. It was a large trailer which could carry a Transit van! The empty trailer weighed as much as the car, and I have had vehicles such as Landrovers and large cars on the trailer behind that Cortina, and on occasions the all-up weight of the trailer and the load was more than twice the weight of the car. On one occasion I remember I had 6 full 45 gallon drums on the trailer, and towed it from Kings Lynn to Sheffield without problems. However, you have to know what you are doing to do that.
The car was still running fine when I sold it, and had done well over 100,000 miles, which was a fantastic mileage for a car at that time. It was a 1966 Cortina, and I sold it in 1985.
Thanks Tony, I was hoping someone would say all that!
kazo, I have looked at lots of different six berth combos but we are limited by what is available nearby and in our price range. The exact right thing just hasn't come up and April is our main holiday of the year so we wanted to to be set up and ready to go by the Easter hols. This caravan is the right price and layout but slightly heavier than I'd hoped unfortunately.
Just wanted to check we are not totally mad before going ahead. No one has said we are totally mad yet!? Still time...
ok I will be the first then you are totally mad! if you had said you had a s60 then fair enough but a s40! its way to small for towing a van of that weight and physical size
the other thing too is that your driving licences, have you passed your test since the law changed? 1997? then what with the cars gross weight of 1940kgs and the caravans max loaded weight 1427kgs you are way to close for comfort of exceeding that unless you are very very strict regarding packing and weigh every last thing you put in there and the car
