My car or caravan has developed a worrying noise when towing at slow speeds.
When I go around corners or there is a camber switch I get a grinding or low level squeak from the back of the car. I'm not sure if I can attribute this to the van or the car.
I have a detachable swan neck tow bar on the car, and an Alko on the van.
Get some sandpaper and some brake cleaner. Sand the tow all, then clean off with brake cleaner, then spray brake cleaner into your hitch and wipe out with some clean kitchen roll. 99% of the time creaks and groans come from s dirty hitch.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
Thanks. I'm going to get someone to check there is nothing wrong with the attachment to the car and then I'll give it a clean as suggested above. It could be worn pads on the hitch as well as I have no idea when they were last changed.

I have had my van 12 years and have never needed to change the pads, give everything a good clean before you do anything else the results will surprise you.

Hi, I've also just realised that I have an elddis so should have a Winterhoff stabiliser.
I've spoken to Pedleys and they say it's ok to use an Alko, has anyone else got an Alko on an Elddis?
A hitch is a hitch is a hitch, they all work on every caravan.

I keep a green washing up scouring in the boot to wipe the ball clean before use.
Its not as abrasive as sandpaper and does the job.
That is a good idea, why didn't I think of that.

You can easily check to see if the friction pads have worn in the stabiliser hitch by firstly cleaning the internal friction pads with brake & clutch cleaner and then do the same with the detachable towball. You then fit the towball into the hitch by hand and then lock the stabiliser firmly down. Try pulling the towball from side to side and up and down and if it moves then the friction pads are worn and need replacing. If the towball won't budge then it proves that the internal friction pads are gripping the towball effectively enough to do it's job.
